COLLEGE SOFTBALL: BERRY DROPS DH TO BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN

In local college softball, Berry opened their 2012 season with a pair of losses to Birmingham-Southern in a double header yesterday, 12-8 and 8-0.  The Lady Vikings will return to action this weekend at the Rhodes College Classic.

In high school basketball playoff news from over the weekend, the Coosa boys and the Model girls both emerged as victors in the Region 7 AA tournament at the Dalton Trade Center.  Coosa beat Dade County 87-65 in the boys championship on Saturday, while Model took a 35-33 victory from Calhoun in the girls title game.

ROME EXCHANGE CLUB PICKS ‘YOUTH OF THE YEAR’

The Rome Exchange Club honored exemplary youth in our community with its Youth of the Year competition on Friday.  High school seniors from area schools delivered speeches on the topic, “All Aboard!  Today’s Youth Strengthening America One Community at a Time”.

ATLANTA HAWKS FALL TO PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS ON THE ROAD

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Portland Trailblazers 97-77 on Saturday night.  The loss leaves the Hawks with a 19 win – 13 loss record so far for the 2011-2012 season with ten wins and six losses on the road.  They continue their current five-game road trip in Chicago against the Bulls today at 4 pm.

ATLANTA BRAVES REPORT TO SPRING TRAINING

Exciting news for baseball fans – Atlanta Braves began reporting to Spring Training over the weekend.  Their first Spring Training game is set for March 3rd against the Detroit Tigers.

The Tellus:  Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville has a plethora of events planned for the next week or so.  Marketing Director Joe Schulman says it will all start with a Junior Astronomy Workshop tonight and culminate with Family Science Night next Friday night.  Activities will also include the latest installment in the Tellus Lunch and Learn series, “Fossils:  Where Geology and Biology Intersect”.
