FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET TWICE THIS WEEK

The Floyd County Commission will meet in regular session tomorrow (Tuesday).  They’ll meet in a caucus session at 4 pm, followed by their regular meeting at 6 pm at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  A called meeting is set for today at 10:30 am to tackle some items that require votes from all three commissioners currently on the board.  Commissioner John Mayes will be out of town and not in attendance at tomorrow’s meeting.  The board is normally comprised of five members, but is down to three until a July 31st special election is held.  Take a look at commissioners’ agendas online at www.romefloyd.com.

CHILLY START TO THE WEEK FOR ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

It appears that Rome and Northwest Georgia experienced April weather in March and is now experiencing March weather in April.  Highs today are only expected to be in the low 60s.  A wind advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for north and central Georgia that will take effect at 11 am today and will remain in effect until 7 pm this evening.  A wind advisory means that sustained winds of at least 20 miles per hour or gusts as high as 35 miles per hour are expected.  Otherwise, we’ll have mostly sunny skies in Rome today.  Skies will be partly cloudy tonight with a low in the mid 30s.  Patchy frost is forecasted after 2 am.

ROME BRAVES TAKE SECOND IN A ROW FROM ASHEVILLE TOURISTS

The Rome Braves picked up their second victory in a row from the Asheville Tourists 6-1 to close out a four game series at McCormick Field in Asheville, North Carolina yesterday.

ATLANTA HAWKS NARROWLY DEFEATED BY NEW YORK KNICKS AT PHILIPS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks were narrowly defeated by the New York Knicks 113-112 yesterday afternoon at the Philips Arena.  The Hawks will host the Los Angeles Clippers tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.  They’ll close out the regular season at home on Thursday night against the Dallas Mavericks.  Then it will be time for the NBA playoffs.

CLOCKTOWER CLASSIC HANDCYCLING RACE SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Clocktower Classic handcycling race will be held this weekend in Rome, with one event in Cedartown.  The event will bring world-class handcyclists to our community.

LOCAL PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS OBSERVE NATIONAL INFANT IMMUNIZATION WEEK

This week, April 21-28, is National Infant Immunization Week.  Northwest Georgia Public Health officials are using this observation to urge parents to protect infants from vaccine-preventable diseases by vaccinating their children.  They’re also using it to celebrate the ten-county public health district’s success in raising up-to-date (UTD) children’s immunization rates to highest in the state, according to the latest State of Georgia Immunization Report.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS IN SERIES CLOSER

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 yesterday in the series closer between the teams at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, thus keeping the Braves from sweeping the D’backs in the four game series.

BERRY SOFTBALL CLOSES OUT SEASON WITH SWEEP OF HUNTINGDON

Berry College’s softball team closed out their regular season with a sweep of Great South Athletic Conference regular season champion Huntingdon yesterday.  The Lady Vikings won game one 5-0 and the night cap 4-3.  That allowed the Lady Vikes to end the season with a program-best 25 win – 11 loss overall record and a three-game winning streak.
