August is right around the corner.  That means back-to-school time!  The Rome City Schools will begin the 2012-2013 school year this Wednesday, August 1st.  The first day of classes for the Floyd County Schools is August 8th, which is also the first day back for St. Mary’s School.  Unity Christian School’s students head back to class on August 6th.  Darlington School’s first day of school is August 20th, while Berry Elementary and Middle School go back to school on August 10th.

ATLANTA BRAVES SWEEP PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES IN WEEKEND SERIES AT TURNER FIELD

The Atlanta Braves completed a three game weekend sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 6-2 win yesterday at Turner Field.  It was the Braves’ second straight sweep of the Phillies after accomplishing that task in Philadelphia just before the All Star break.

WOMEN OF WORTH HELPING LOCAL WOMEN WITH FREE PAP SMEAR SCREENINGS

Women of WORTH, Inc. will host a Free Pap Smear Screening Day today at 1513 Dean Street in Rome.  Nurse Practitioner Marilyn Ringstaff says that while today’s event is completely booked, women can still call to get on a waiting list for future pap smear screenings.

APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR LITTLE MISS BREANNA SIDS AWARENESS PAGEANT

Applications are being accepted for the Little Miss Breanna SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Awareness Pageant.  The event is set for Saturday, August 11th at 4 pm at Belle Terra in Cave Spring.  The application deadline is August 1st.  Age groups are 0-15.

ROME BRAVES COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP OF SAVANNAH SAND GNATS WITH SUNDAY EVENING WIN AT SMS

The Rome Braves took a 6-2 victory from the Savannah Sand Gnats yesterday evening at State Mutual Stadium, allowing the Braves to complete a three game sweep of the Sand Gnats over the weekend.  The Braves maintain a two and a half game lead in the South Atlantic League’s Southern Division.

LAST DAY OF EARLY VOTING IS TODAY

Today is the final day of early voting for the July 31st primary election.  Floyd County voters can cast their ballots from 8 am until 5 pm at the Floyd County Elections Office inside the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  Polls will be open on Election Day next Tuesday from 7 am until 7 pm.

CANCER NAVIGATORS PRESENTED WITH $12,585 CHECK FOR BAGLEYS MOTORCYCLE RIDE

Cancer Navigators was presented with a check for $12,585 from Buddy and Darlene Bagley yesterday that raised from a motorcycle ride held earlier this month to benefit the organization.  The ride was held in honor of Darlene, who is a cancer patient.  The Bagleys say they are grateful for the cancer care that Darlene has received at the Harbin Clinic’s Tony E. Warren MD Cancer Center and for the services provided by Cancer Navigators.  The Ride for Cancer Navigators was held on Saturday, July 14th; it was the second annual event.
