ROME BRAVES’ SERIES CLOSER WITH ASHEVILLE TOURISTS AT SMS RAINED OUT

The Rome Braves’ series closer against the Asheville Tourists scheduled for yesterday at State Mutual Stadium has been postponed due to rain.  It will be made up as part of a double header on Thursday, May 24th at 5 pm.

Rome’s Downtown Development Authority is currently working with the Fanning Institute of the University of Georgia to develop a new master plan for the expansion and development of downtown Rome.  The comprehensive study includes a town hall meeting that was held in conjunction with the City of Rome on Tuesday night, along with stakeholder interviews, intercept interviews and an overall evaluation of all aspects of downtown Rome.

ROME SHRINE CLUB AIRLIFTS SUMMERVILLE GIRL TO BURN HOSPITAL IN CINCINNATI

The Rome Shrine Club has airlifted a five year old child from Summerville to their burn hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio after the child was accidentally burned from hot food spilled in her lap, according to Jerry Collins, Hospital Chairman for the Rome Shrine Club.  Collins says that this was done at no cost to the family.  The Rome Shrine Club will take care of all expenses related to the treatment of the child, including transportation to future treatment.  Collins indicates that community support of the Shriners allows the club to help young burn victims.

WATTERSON NAMED INTERIM PRESIDENT OF GHC

Georgia Highlands College has announced that Renva Watterson has been named the interim president of the college, effective May 14th, by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby.  Watterson will take the post from Rob Watts, who has been named interim president of Georgia Perimeter College in metro Atlanta.

ATLANTA BRAVES COMPLETE THREE GAME SWEEP OF ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, TOP NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

The Atlanta Braves completed a three game sweep of the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals yesterday with a 7-4 win at St. Louis’s Busch Stadium.

ROME HIGH SCHOOL ONCE AGAIN NAMED ONE OF THE BEST HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE US BY US NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Rome High School has been named by US News & World Report magazine as one of the best high schools in the nation for the third time in five years.  According to a Rome High School media release, Rome High is a Silver Award Winner for 2012.  In Georgia, RHS ranked 31st out of 446 schools.  It earned a ranking of 1,679 out of 21,776 high schools in the US.

GEORGIA’S NET TAX COLLECTIONS UP IN APRIL

Governor Nathan Deal has announced that Georgia’s net tax collections for the month of April 2012 totaled $1.53 billion for an increase of $152 million or 11 percent compared to April 2011.  According to a release from the Governor’s office, through 10 months of Fiscal Year 2012, net revenue collections totaled nearly $13.3 billion for an increase of $677 million or 5.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

ROME BRAVES BACK HOME TODAY AFTER 0-7 ROAD TRIP

The Rome Braves took the day off yesterday after completing a seven game road trip in which they lost four games to the Hagerstown Suns in Maryland and then lost three more to the Greenville Drive in South Carolina.  They’ll lick their wounds and hope to have home field advantage as they welcome the Asheville Tourists to State Mutual Stadium for a four game series that begins today and continues thru Sunday.  The Braves and the Tourists will play an early Education Day game today at 10:30 am.  It will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 10:15 am.
