ATLANTA BRAVES BACK AT TURNER FIELD TONIGHT TO KICK OFF HOME STAND AGAINST PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

The Atlanta Braves were off yesterday and will back within the friendly confines of Turner Field to begin a 10 game home stand tonight.  The series will begin with a three game set against the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend.  First pitch of tonight’s game is set for 7:35 pm.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 6:20 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR: UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the preliminary unemployment rate for metro Rome rose to 10.6 percent in June, up from 10.2 percent in May.  Metro Rome’s jobless rate was 11.2 percent in June 2011.

LOCAL CHAMBERS JOIN TO URGE SUPPORT OF T-SPLOST

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce and the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce all joined to endorse the 2012 Transportation Referendum (or T-SPLOST) yesterday afternoon at a joint press conference at the intersection of US 41 and Georgia 140.

ATLANTA BRAVES CLOSE OUT ROAD TRIP WITH WIN OVER MIAMI MARLINS

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 7-1 yesterday afternoon in the series closer between the teams in Miami, Florida.  Tommy Hanson got the win for the Braves.  Juan Francisco, Michael Bourn and Jason Heyward all homered in yesterday’s game.

FLOYD COUNTY GOP ACTIVITIES ABOUND WITH PRIMARY ELECTION LOOMING NEAR

With the July 31st primary election right around the corner, the Floyd County GOP is keeping busy.  Layla Shipman with the Floyd GOP says that the group will have their monthly meeting this Saturday morning, July 28th at Western Sizzlin.  Breakfast will be served at 8:30 am, with the meeting to get underway at 9 am.  The cost is $8 per person.  Candidates for State Senate District 52 will be in attendance, including David Doss, Chuck Hufstetler and Hayden Collins.  That will be followed by an election night gathering next Tuesday night beginning at 7 pm at the Floyd GOP headquarters at 337 Broad Street.
