JUNE REVENUE UP BY 2.6 PERCENT IN GEORGIA

Governor Nathan Deal reported late last week that Georgia’s net tax collections for the month of June totaled $1.54 billion, an increase of $39 million, or 2.6 percent, compared to June 2011.  For fiscal year 2012, which ended on June 30th, net revenue collections totaled $16.1 billion, an increase of $742 million, or 4.8 percent, compared to FY 2011.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY COMPLETES CANDIDACY YEAR 1 FOR NCAA DIVISION II

Good news for Shorter University – it learned late last week from the National Collegiate Athletic Association that it has successfully completed Candidacy Year 1 in the association’s Division II membership process.  Shorter is now in Candidacy Year 2.  The membership process is a three-year process for Shorter.

BUSY SUMMER AT TELLUS M– USEUM

A busy summer is in full swing at the Tellus:  Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville.  Marketing director Joe Schulman invites the public to come in from the heat (or the rain, as the case may be) and enjoy an educational and fun time for the whole family.  He says that a number of great shows are playing in the museum’s planetarium, and the museum is the site of numerous informative lectures.  

DR. GAYLAND COOPER SET TO RETIRE AS RCS SUPERINTENDENT

Rome City Schools Superintendent Dr. Gayland Cooper has announced that he is retiring from his position on December first.  Dr. Cooper has been in public education for nearly 40 years.  He has served as RCS Superintendent since 2003.

ATLANTA BRAVES COMPLETE THREE GAME SWEEP OF THE METS WITH SUNDAY VICTORY AT TURNER FIELD

The Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 6-1 yesterday afternoon at Turner Field, allowing the Braves to complete a three game sweep of the Mets over the weekend.

Rome resident Buddy Bagley is urging area motorcyclists to participate in the second annual Ride for Cancer Navigators.  It’s set for this Saturday, July 14th and is being held in honor of Bagley’s wife, Darlene, who has been battling cancer.  

ROME BRAVES/WEST VIRGINIA POWER OPENER AT STATE MUTUAL STADIUM SUSPENDED DUE TO RAIN; MOYLAN TO MAKE REHAB APPEARANCE IN ROME ON FRIDAY

The skies opened up and a torrential downpour pelted the area last night, leading to the suspension of the Rome Braves’ series opener with the West Virginia Power last night at State Mutual Stadium.  The Power had jumped out to an early lead of 6-1 when the game was suspended in the second inning.  It is scheduled resume tonight at 5 pm and will be followed by a seven inning game.  Both will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  
The Rome Braves’ four game series with the Power will continue thru Friday and will be followed by four games with the Asheville Tourists this Saturday thru next Tuesday at State Mutual Stadium.  Get tickets for the Braves’ current home stand at www.romebraves.com or by calling (706) 378-5144.
