ATLANTA HAWKS BEAT MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES ON SATURDAY NIGHT AT PHILIPS, READY TO HOST TORONTO RAPTORS IN MLK DAY GAME

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks narrowly defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 93-91 at the Philips Arena on Saturday night. The Hawks now have nine wins and four losses so far for the 2011-2012 season.  They’ll host the Toronto Raptors this afternoon at 4 pm.

MLK COMMISSION OF ROME AND NWGA TO HONOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR THIS WEEKEND

Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  The MLK Commission of Rome and Northwest Georgia will honor the slain civil rights leader all this weekend with a variety of activities.  The theme for the observation is “United We Serve”.  The local King weekend celebration will begin tonight with the presentation of “A Place of Pride and Dignity” at the Rome City Auditorium, according to Alvin Jackson, chairman of the MLK Commission of Rome and Northwest Georgia.  The play, written by Mrs. Willie Mae Samuel of Rome, will start at 6:45 pm.  

POLAR BEAR PADDLE SET FOR TOMORROW

The 6th annual Polar Bear Paddle is set for tomorrow.  The six-mile canoe and kayak trip down the Etowah River from Jim Dixon Landing at Grizzard Park to Heritage Park in downtown Rome is sponsored by Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful, Rome’s River ECO Center and the Coosa River Basin Initiative.  It is free.  Paddlers will take off about 10:30 am, following a safety briefing and announcements.  Complimentary canoes and kayaks will be provided by the CRBI and the City of Rome on a first come, first served basis.  Shuttles from Heritage Park to Grizzard Park will be provided by CRBI after the paddle.  Motorized boats will patrol the area where the paddle will take place to ensure participants’ safety.

LOCAL SCHOOLS NAMED TITLE I DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS

Five Floyd County Schools have been named Title 1 Distinguished Schools this year by the Georgia Department of Education.  Those include Alto Park Elementary, Cave Spring Elementary, Garden Lakes Elementary, McHenry Primary and Midway Primary.

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers are coming to the Cedartown Performing Arts Center!!   Actually, Melody Knighten and Mark Hinds will bring the duo to life in “A Tribute to Dolly and Kenny” tomorrow night.  The performance, set to begin at 7:30 pm, will kick off the Center’s Legends in Concert series.

RECYCLING DAY TOMORROW

The Rome Floyd Recycling Center will hold another Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic day tomorrow.  Local residents will be able to dispose of their household waste and electronics at the recycling center at 405 Watters Street in north Rome.  Call ahead to schedule an appointment at (706) 291-5266.

GREATER ROME CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GEARS UP FOR ANNUAL MEETING LATER THIS MONTH

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce has announced that J.
