ROME BRAVES ANNOUNCE SAL PLAYOFF TICKETS TO GO ON SALE ON AUGUST 16TH

The Rome Braves have announced that play-off tickets for the 2012 South Atlantic League championship will go on sale to the public on August 16th.  They can be purchased at State Mutual Stadium or online at www.romebraves.com.  Ticket prices are the same as regular season prices.

ATLANTA FALCONS PRE-SEASON TO GET UNDERWAY TOMORROW NIGHT

Tomorrow night’s the night that NFL pre-season action takes the stage at the Georgia Dome as the Atlanta Falcons host the Baltimore Ravens.  Kick off is set for 7:30 pm.  Follow the Atlanta Falcons all season long, once the regular season begins, on 95.7 FM The Ridge.

LITTLE MISS BREANNA SIDS PAGEANT TO RAISE AWARENESS OF SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is a tragic mystery of medical science.  There is no known cause of it and no symptoms other than death.  Floyd County resident Julia Pope is familiar with the tragedy.  She lost her own baby daughter, Breanna Bishop, to SIDS back in December.  Breanna was just nine days old.  Pope is  honoring her daughter’s memory with the Little Miss Breanna SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Awareness Pageant.  The event is set for this Saturday, August 11th at 4 pm at Belle Terra in Cave Spring.   Little beauties will compete in various age categories from 0-15 years old.

PUBLIC INPUT BEING SOUGHT ON NEW FLOYD COUNTY SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT

The Floyd County Board of Education has begun the search for a new superintendent to replace Dr. Lynn Plunkett, who will officially be retired as of December first.  A survey has been developed by the Georgia School Boards Association to help the board better understand the wishes of the community as decisions are made during the superintendent search.  The brief survey takes about five minutes to complete.  Feedback is being sought on the community’s ideas about the qualities that are important in a new superintendent.  The survey is available online at www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22FU3UQMT9D.

ATLANTA BRAVES’ WINNING WAYS OVER PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES COME TO AN END WITH LOSS IN PHILLY

The Atlanta Braves’ winning streak over the Philadelphia Phillies came to an end last night as the Phillies shut out the Braves 3-0 last night in Philly.  Mike Minor took the loss; he gave up three runs in the first inning, including a two run homer to Ryan Howard.  Minor did not allow any more runs after that and completed seven innings.

APPROACHING SEASON RAISES QUESTIONS FOR PENN STATE FOOTBALL

Football season is right around the corner.  Undoubtedly, college football fans can’t wait until the season begins.  Things will be different this year for Penn State fans with the recent sanctions issued by the NCAA as a response to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and its cover up.  Recruiting for the football program has been challenged by the scandal and resulting sanctions.  Randy Taylor, a 30 year college coaching veteran who has coached at UCLA, Illinois and UNLV and a representative for the National Collegiate Scouting Association (or NCSA), says the main focus for Penn State (as far as recruiting is concerned) should be current players.

NEW FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO TAKE OATH OF OFFICE ON WEDNESDAY

Floyd County Commissioners elect Larry Maxey and Rhonda Wallace will take their official Oath of Office this Wednesday, August 8th at 9 am in the Community Room on the second floor of the Floyd County Administration Building on East 4th Avenue in downtown Rome.  Probate Court Judge Steve R. Burkhalter will administer the Oath, according to a release from the Board of Commissioners.

ROME BRAVES’ SERIES CLOSER WITH KANNAPOLIS INTIMIDATORS RAINED OUT IN NC; HEFFLINGER NAMED SALLY LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Rome Braves’ series closer with the Kannapolis Intimidators was halted due to rain in Kannapolis, North Carolina last night.  It will not be made up as the Braves and the Intimidators will not meet again this season.  The Braves currently have a five game lead in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League.  They’ll take today off and will welcome the Greensboro Grasshoppers to Rome for a four game series tomorrow night thru Saturday night.  First pitch of tomorrow night’s game is set for 7 pm at State Mutual Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com. Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.
