EARLY VOTING CONTINUES

Here’s a reminder that early voting continues at the Floyd County Elections Office at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome thru July 27th.  Hours are Monday thru Friday from 8 am until 5 pm.  A special Saturday voting day has been set for July 21st from 9 am until 4 pm.  An additional early voting site will be open at the Rome Civic Center from July 23rd thru 26th.

ROME BRAVES FALL TO ASHEVILLE TOURISTS AT SMS

The Rome Braves fell to the Asheville Tourists 5-2 last night at State Mutual Stadium.  Atlanta Braves pitcher Peter Moylan, who was in town on a rehab assignment, was tagged with the loss.

ATLANTA BRAVES TO HOST SF GIANTS AT TURNER FIELD

Following their three game sweep of the New York Mets at Turner Field over the weekend, the Atlanta Braves took a day off yesterday and will return to action tonight with a three game series against the San Francisco Giants in Atlanta that will continue thru Thursday.  First pitch of tonight’s game is set for 7:10 pm.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 5:55 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

JUNE REVENUE UP BY 2.6 PERCENT IN GEORGIA

Governor Nathan Deal reported late last week that Georgia’s net tax collections for the month of June totaled $1.54 billion, an increase of $39 million, or 2.6 percent, compared to June 2011.  For fiscal year 2012, which ended on June 30th, net revenue collections totaled $16.1 billion, an increase of $742 million, or 4.8 percent, compared to FY 2011.

HEART OF COMMUNITY FOUNDATION DONATES AEDS FOR ROMAN HOLIDAY

The Sulzbacher Roman Holiday riverboat owned by the City of Rome was recently presented with a portable automated external defibrillator (AED) by the Heart of the Community Foundation.

HEFFLINGER NAMED SALLY LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

In some good news from the Rome Braves, outfielder Robby Hefflinger has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for July 9-15, 2012.  During that time, Hefflinger batted .600 (12 for 20) with two doubles, one homerun and six RBI.  Hefflinger also tied a Rome Braves record of six RBI in a single game on July 4th in Greenville.  Three other Rome players have accomplished that feat, including Diory Hernandez in Charleston on July 22, 2004, Jamie Romak vs. Charleston on June 25, 2006 and Cody Johnson vs. Charleston on August 7, 2008.

HOT CARS A DEATH TRAP FOR KIDS

Summer heat can be dangerous, for sure.  It’s even more dangerous in a hot car.  There have been numerous reports across the state of children being locked in hot cars, which can be life-threatening.  Daniel Carpenter, fire safety educator with the Rome Fire Department, says that heat can even be a threat on cooler days when it comes to cars.  Carpenter says the temperature difference between the outdoors and inside the car is huge.

DR. GAYLAND COOPER SET TO RETIRE AS RCS SUPERINTENDENT

Rome City Schools Superintendent Dr. Gayland Cooper has announced that he is retiring from his position on December first.  Dr. Cooper has been in public education for nearly 40 years.  He has served as RCS Superintendent since 2003.
