COLLEGE SOFTBALL: SHORTER DOWN ON GULF COAST FOR SOME GAMES, BERRY CONTINUES PLAY IN NTC CLASSIC

Shorter University’s softball team will participate in the University of West Florida Spring Fling in Pensacola, Florida over the next couple of days.  They’ll face Evangel in a double header this evening at 5 pm, which will be followed a double header with Cardinal Stritch tomorrow at 3 pm.  From there, the Lady Hawks will be off to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the Gulf Coast Invitational this Friday thru Sunday.

VOTERS TO GO TO THE POLLS FOR SUPER TUESDAY TOMORROW

Tomorrow is Super Tuesday.  Georgia is among 10 states nationwide whose voters will go to the polls to have their say on who should get the Republican presidential nomination.  In addition, voters in Floyd County will determine the fate of the 2012 SPLOST.  And those in the City of Rome will cast their ballots for or against Sunday alcohol package sales.  Polls will open at 7 am and remain open until 7 pm.  For more information about tomorrow’s election, call the Floyd County Elections and Registration office at (706) 295-5167.

ANNUAL FINSTER FEST SET FOR MAY 5TH AND 6TH IN SUMMERVILLE

The Paradise Garden Foundation has announced that this year’s Finster Fest has been scheduled for May 5th and 6th at Dowdy Park in Summerville.  The event began as Howard Finster Day in Summerville in the early 1980s and has become internationally known as Finster Fest.  It is one of North Georgia’s most popular Folk Art and Music Festivals.  Finster Fest 2012 will include performing acts such as Roger Allen Wade, Patterson Hood of the Drive-by Truckers and others.  It will also serve as host to artists from around the nation, coming together to celebrate the legacy of Howard Finster.  In addition, there will be a recycled art project and a shuttle to Paradise Garden for tours during the two-day festival.

AREA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAMS’ PLAYOFF RUNS STOP AT ELITE EIGHT

Three area girls high school basketball teams remained in the hunt for a state title as we headed into the weekend, and all three have since been eliminated from the playoffs in Elite Eight games.

ROME CITY COMMISSION TO MEET TONIGHT

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session this evening.  They’ll meet in a caucus session at 5 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 6:30 pm at City Hall on Broad Street in downtown Rome.  Both are open to the public.  Take a look at the Commission’s agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

LOCAL CITIZEN GROUP SUPPORTS 2012 SPLOST

A group of local business people are speaking out in support of the 2012 SPLOST.  Nancy Smith, owner of NL Smithworks, Alan Horne with Suzuki Manufacturing, are members of the Rome/Floyd County Citizens for Progress and discussed the matter on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome last Friday.

SHORTER HAWKS NAB FIRST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT TITLE; BOTH HAWKS AND LADY HAWKS HEADED FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS

The Shorter University Hawks’ amazing 2011-2012 was capped off with a its first ever Southern States Athletic Conference tournament title as the Hawks beat Belhaven 89-71 in the SSAC championship game on Saturday night at the Forum in downtown Rome.  Shorter advanced to the championship game after a 63-50 win over Faulkner in the semifinal round on Friday night.  Both the Hawks, who are the number 2 team in the NAIA and were the East Division’s top seed in the SSAC tourney, and Belhaven, the West Division’s number 3 seed, have made it to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, set for March 14th thru 20th in Kansas City, Missouri.  Jim Bojo will provide coverage of the Hawks in the NAIA tourney on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

ATLANTA HAWKS NAB A PAIR OF WEEKEND WINS AT PHILIPS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks nabbed a couple of home victories over the weekend, 99-94 over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday and 97-90 over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night at the Philips Arena.  The Hawks will hit the road to take on the Indiana Pacers tomorrow night at 7 pm.
