SHORTER UNIVERSITY SIGNS 14 ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

Yesterday, of course, was National Signing Day, a day when high school athletes sign letters of intent to play football at their college of choice.  Shorter University has signed 14 student-athletes, according to a Shorter sports release.  This marks the first recruiting class that will compete at the NCAA Division II level.  

ATLANTA HAWKS BACK HOME TO FACE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES TONIGHT

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks return to their home court at the Philips Arena to take on the Memphis Grizzlies tonight at 7:30 pm.  The Hawks just completed a five game road trip to close out the month of January that left them with four wins and one loss.  They have 16 wins and six losses overall for the 2011-2012 season.

AARP TAX AIDE VOLUNTEERS TO BEGIN OFFERING TAX HELP TODAY

Need help with your taxes?  Starting today, trained AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will provide free help and electronic filing to low to middle income taxpayers at the Senior Adult Center at 1325 Kingston Road in Rome on Wednesdays from 1 pm until 4 pm thru April 11th.  Volunteers will also be offering tax help at the Rome Floyd County Library at 205 Riverside Parkway on Mondays from 1:30 pm until 5 pm from February 6th through April 16th and on Saturdays from 10 am until 2 pm from February 4th through April 14th.

BODY OF MISSING CHATTOOGA WOMAN FOUND

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Posse discovered the body of a missing Chattooga County woman yesterday in a rural area off Haywood Valley Road in Chattooga County.  Dixie Yvonne Brown, age 74, has Alzheimer’s Disease and had been missing since early Sunday morning.  The exact cause of death had not been determined as of yesterday but it appears the woman died of natural causes.

SHORTER BASKETBALL: NUMBER ONE HAWKS SEEK TO STAY UNDEFEATED AGAINST POINT UNIVERSITY TONIGHT

Shorter University men’s basketball will take to the airwaves of 95.7 FM The Ridge this evening as the number one Hawks seek to remain undefeated in a non-conference match with Point University in East Point, Georgia.  The Hawks are 22-0 on the season and have stayed at the top of the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll for three straight weeks; they’ll be looking for win number 23 tonight. Tip off is set for 7 pm. The game will also be aired online (on our new and improved website) at www.theridge957.com.  We’ll also have coverage of Shorter Hawks and Lady Hawks basketball against Southern Wesleyan this Saturday in Central, South Carolina.  Tip off is set for 2 pm for the women and 4 pm for the men.  

ROMNEY TOPS POLLS IN FLORIDA

Voters went to the polls in Florida yesterday for the states’ presidential primary election.  Mitt Romney took the most votes by a fairly wide margin, with Newt Gingrich coming in second and with Rick Santorum and Ron Paul finishing third and fourth, respectively.

BERRY COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL PICKS UP SECOND STRAIGHT WIN OVER HUNTINGDON; SHORTER’S WALTER HILL PICKS UP NAIA, SSAC HONORS

In your local college basketball update, Berry College’s Vikings picked up their second straight win 83-80 over Huntingdon last night at Berry’s Cage Center.  No more Berry College basketball is on tap for this week.  The Vikes are off until next Wednesday, February 8th, when they travel to Maryville, Tennessee to take on Maryville College.  The Lady Vikes will return to action on Saturday, February 11th as they, along with the Vikes, host LaGrange.  Catch select Berry College men’s and women’s basketball games this season on WLAQ AM 1410 and www.wlaq1410.com.
