ATLANTA HAWKS LOSE TO MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES AT PHILIPS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks returned to their home court of the Philips Arena last night only to lose to the Memphis Grizzlies 96-77.  It was just the Hawks’ second home loss of the season, leaving them with eight wins and two losses at home and a 16 win – seven loss record overall so far for the 2011-2012 season.  The Hawks will welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to the Philips Arena tomorrow night; tip off is set for 7 pm.

NATIONAL TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH TO BE OBSERVED LOCALLY IN FEBRUARY

This month, February, is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.  Amy Weaver, Executive Director of the Hospitality House for Women says that the statistics are staggering related to teen violence.  She says that 71 percent of teens say that bullying is a problem in school.  Weaver indicates that her organization will be working hard on a variety of activities this month to bring the issue to light.  

CHAMBER PRESIDENT HAS POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR 2012

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce serves as the economic development arm for Rome and Floyd County.  Where that’s concerned, Chamber President Al Hodge has a positive outlook for 2012. He said in a recent interview on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome that while the community, like the rest of the nation, is still in economic recovery, there have been many developments in the past year that indicate growth.  He points to things like the recent expansion announcement of Neaton Rome and the construction of the new Lowe’s Distribution Center in Rome that are expected to provide a boost to the local economy.

PATRIOTS AND GIANTS TO FACE OFF IN SUPER BOWL 46 THIS SUNDAY

And, of course, Super Bowl Sunday is coming up this weekend.  The AFC Champion New England Patriots and the NFC Champion New York Giants will go head to head in Super Bowl 46 on Sunday evening at 6:30 pm in Indianapolis.  The game will be televised on NBC.

GINGREY, GRAVES SUPPORT MEASURE TO REPEAL PORTION OF OBAMACARE

 Congressmen Phil Gingrey and Tom Graves have expressed support of HR 1173:  the Fiscal Responsibility and Retirement Security Act of 2011.  It is a bill intended to repeal the CLASS Act program of Obamacare.  

LINDALE MAN KILLED WHILE CROSSING TRAIN TRACKS

A Lindale man was killed while walking across tracks in front of an oncoming train yesterday.  According to police, the 29-year-old and another person were crossing the tracks along Maple Road where it changes into Park Avenue.  One of them made it across.  The 29-year-old, whose identity has not been released, did not and was hit by a train.  An investigation into the incident is underway.
