ROME NOON OPTIMIST CLUB TO HOLD STUDENT OF THE YEAR BANQUET TONIGHT

The Rome Noon Optimist Club will hold it’s 9th annual Student of the Year Awards Banquet this evening at 6 pm at the Palladium.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL CLOSES OUT 2011-2012 REGULAR SEASON ON VICTORIOUS NOTE, NOW READY FOR SSAC TOURNEY

Shorter University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out the 2011-2012 regular season with wins over Southern States Athletic Conference rival Truett McConnell in Cleveland, Georgia on Saturday.  The 20th ranked Lady Hawks beat the Lady Bears 92-25 to finish the regular season with a 25-5 overall record and 16-3 in the SSAC.  The number two Hawks topped the Bears 97-82 to end the regular season with 28 wins and 2 losses overall and 17 wins and only one loss in the SSAC.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY FINISHES ALABAMA ARCTIC BLAST WITH FIVE WINS AND TWO LOSSES, BERRY TAKES THREE OF FOUR AT RHODES COLLEGE CLASSIC

Shorter University’s softball team continued play in the Alabama Arctic Blast in  Decatur, Alabama over the weekend.  In scores from Friday, the number 9 Lady Hawks lost to Milligan 5-4 and beat Thomas 4-1.  On Saturday, the Lady Hawks beat Bryan 5-4 with an extra inning, which was followed by a loss to Martin Methodist 6-5.  They bounced back with an 8-0 shut out of Point University on Saturday evening.  Shorter’s softball team will return to action tomorrow in Waleska, Georgia with a double header against Reinhardt at 3 pm.

WEST BEATS EAST IN 2012 NBA ALL STAR GAME

ADOPT-A-STREAM WORKSHOP SET FOR THIS SATURDAY

The Coosa River Basin Initiative is teaming with the Rome/Floyd ECO River Education Center and the Darlington School Outdoor Club to host a Georgia Adopt-A-Stream workshop on Saturday, March 3rd.  Participants will learn how to conduct chemical water monitoring on local streams and submit their data to Georgia’s Adopt-A-Stream database which helps track stream health across the state, according to a CRBI media release.  The three-hour workshop will be taught by River Education Center Director Eric Lindberg and hosted by Darlington School.  It is set to begin at 9 am at Ridge Ferry Park.  Participants will learn how to test water for temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen through hands-onn activities at nearby creeks.  These chemical indicators paint a general picture of stream health and can help identify some pollution problems.

Shorter University’s baseball team swept Southern States Athletic Conference rival Loyola University in a three game series over the weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The Hawks won Friday evening’s game 11-3 and both games of Saturday’s double header 15-0 and 9-3.  They’ll get back into action at home against Talladega College in a double header tomorrow at 1 pm at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

Tune in for high school basketball playoff action on the radio tonight on WLAQ AM 1410 and 95.7 FM The Ridge.  WLAQ will be at Darlington School as the Lady Tigers host Holy Innocents in a Class A game at 7 pm which will also be aired online at www.wlaq1410.com.  95.7 FM The Ridge will have coverage as the Model Lady Blue Devils host Union County in a Class AA match up at 6 pm.  You can also listen to that game online at www.theridge957.com.
