RAIN CONTINUES TO FALL, SOME THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE TODAY

Rain continues to fall over Rome and Floyd County.  The National Weather Service has reported just over a half an inch of rain from late Monday night/early yesterday morning thru early this morning at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field in the Armuchee community, bringing the total since Sunday to almost an inch and a half.  Showers and possibly thunderstorms remain in the forecast for today, with highs around 62 and high winds.  Rain is expected to move out of the area tomorrow evening and temperatures will begin to drop as we head into the weekend.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIES NOW ON SALE!!

I’ve got three words for you – Girl Scout cookies!  The Girl Scout Cookie Program kicked off last Friday as Girl Scouts began taking cookie orders.  They’ll be delivered February 11th thru 17th.  Girl Scout Cookie booths will open on February 17th around the region, with the cookie campaign to wrap up on March 10th.  Cookies are $3.50 per box.  Money raised go towards Girl Scout programs, according to local troop leader Charisse Durham, who heads up Troop 7244 in Lindale.  She says that selling cookies is an educational experience for Girl Scouts.

GEORGIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY BEGINS WORK UNDER THE GOLD DOME

The 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly got underway yesterday under the Gold Dome in Atlanta.  Area legislators say that they anticipate that the state’s budget and education will top their agenda in 2012.

In your local college basketball update, Berry College’s men lost to Huntingdon College 75-57 in Montgomery, Alabama last night.  The Vikings will be joined by the Lady Vikings for a couple of matches at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi this Saturday.  Tip off is set for 2 pm for the women and 4 pm for the men.  The games will be broadcast on the WLAQ AM 1410 and online at www.wlaq1410.com.

ROME MAYOR EVIE MCNIECE ANTICIPATES A GOOD 2012 FOR CITY OF ROME

The Rome City Commission is back at work for 2012.  Rome Mayor Evie McNiece said on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome on Monday that she is hopeful for a positive new year after a 2011 that had the city commission (like so many other governmental organizations) facing tough challenges due to a recovering economy.

Rain and mild temperatures continue to cover Rome and Floyd County.  The National Weather Service reported almost a half an inch of rain from yesterday thru early this morning at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field in the Armuchee community.  Rain and fairly warm temperatures remain in the forecast for the next couple of days, it will start to feel more like winter as those temps drop and the rain moves out later on this week.

TIDE ROLLS TIGERS TO WIN BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

In college football, we knew the winner of this year’s national title would be from the SEC.  And in the end, Alabama emerged as victors in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game.  The Crimson Tide blanked the LSU Tigers 21-0 to win another national championship last night in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Call it revenge for Alabama, whose only loss during the regular season was to LSU back in November.  LSU enjoyed a 2011 season in which they were undefeated until last night.
