The Rome Braves lost to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-1 last night in the opener of a four game series at State Mutual Stadium.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL HAWKS READY FOR TOUGH COMPETITION IN GULF COAST CONFERENCE

The football team has returned to Shorter University!  This will be the first year that the Hawks will play in the Gulf South Conference of the NCAA Division II, after years with the Mid South Conference of the NAIA.  Offensive Coordinator Tim Mathis told the voice of the Hawks, 95.7 FM The Ridge’s Jim Bojo, that there’s tough competition ahead, but the Hawks are ready to fight.

GEMA AWARDS GRANT TO FLOYD COUNTY FOR NOAA WEATHER RADIOS

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security, on behalf of Governor Nathan Deal, recently awarded a $59,366 hazard mitigation grant to Floyd County for the purchase of 1,300 NOAA All-Hazards weather radios to be distributed throughout the county.

The Rome Braves have announced that play-off tickets for the 2012 South Atlantic League championship will go on sale to the public on August 16th.  They can be purchased at State Mutual Stadium or online at www.romebraves.com.  Ticket prices are the same as regular season prices.

ATLANTA BRAVES PICK UP THE ‘W’ IN SERIES CLOSER WITH PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES IN PHILLY

The Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-6 last night in the series closer between the teams at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park.  The Braves held a 6-1 lead thru the first part of the game, thanks in part to a two-run double from Tim Hudson in the second inning and a two-run homer from Michael Bourn in the fourth.  A five-run fifth inning allowed the Phillies to tie the game up 6-6.  The Braves came storming back with four runs in the seventh inning, including a tie-breaking three-run double from Dan Uggla.  David Ross also notched the first stolen base of his career in the seventh inning of last night’s game.  They added two more runs in the eighth to take the final victory, again, of 12-6 over the Phillies.

FMC’S PRIMARY STROKE CENTER EARNS RENEWAL OF ADVANCED CERTIFICATION FROM THE JOINT COMMISSION

Floyd Medical Center’s Primary Stroke Center has earned renewed Advanced Certification from The Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association.  According to an FMC media release, the certification recognizes centers that have the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for stroke patients.  Floyd went through a rigorous on-site review earlier this month with an expert from The Joint Commission.

ATLANTA BRAVES’ WINNING WAYS OVER PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES COME TO AN END WITH LOSS IN PHILLY

The Atlanta Braves’ winning streak over the Philadelphia Phillies came to an end last night as the Phillies shut out the Braves 3-0 last night in Philly.  Mike Minor took the loss; he gave up three runs in the first inning, including a two run homer to Ryan Howard.  Minor did not allow any more runs after that and completed seven innings.
