A Coosa High School baseball standout has been selected by the Washington Nationals in Major League Baseball’s First-Year player draft.  Mitchell Williams, a catcher, was selected in the 39th round on the third and final day of the draft yesterday.  Mitchell, who had already signed to play baseball at the Marion Institute, will now have to decide if he’s joining the Nationals or going to play college ball.

‘SKILLS TO JOBS: READY TO HIRE’ SET FOR TODAY AT ROME CIVIC CENTER

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Greater Rome Existing Industries Association and Education and Workforce Committees, are sponsoring “Skills to Jobs: Ready to Hire” today from 3 pm until 6 pm at the Rome Civic Center.  The event will include local manufacturers and industries that are experiencing difficulty finding the skilled workforce for their available opportunities, according to a Chamber media release.  Some of the companies set to participate in the event include:  Georgia Power, Marglen Industries, F&P Georgia, OTR Wheel, Rome Tool and Die, Commercial Fluid Power and Suhner Manufacturing.  Potential benefits available to those who attend the event include:  securing an interview for a job, available entry-level position for which advancement is possible through further education/training, identification and matching of needed job skills and internship/apprenticeship.

GATHERING BREAKFAST TO RAISE AWARENESS OF COLON CANCER

The Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition and the 100 Black Men of Rome have planned a Gathering Breakfast for this Saturday, June 9th at 8 am.  According to a release from the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, the program will focus on colon cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment and will be held in the Life Center of Love Joy Baptist Church at 436 Branham Avenue.  The event and the meal is free; however, reservations are required and can be made by calling (706) 346-1748 by this Friday.

ATLANTA BRAVES TOP MIAMI MARLINS FOR THE SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW IN MIAMI

The Atlanta Braves once again defeated the Miami Marlins 2-1 last night in game two of a three game series in Miami, Florida.  That marks the Braves’ third win in a row.  Randall Delgado got the win for the Braves after allowing only one run on two hits in six and one-third innings of work.  Craig Kimbrel got the save, his 17th of the season.

CONGRESSMAN TOM GRAVES FEELS HOPEFUL FOR NEXT GENERATION

A recent Gallup poll reveals that Americans overall are not satisfied with the next generation’s prospects.  Congressman Tom Graves said in a recent interview on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome that he believes that measures can be taken to make sure that the next generation has it better than the one before them, including placing government in its proper role.

The Rome Braves beat the Greenville Drive 5-3 last night in the opener of a three game series between the teams (and of a six game home stand) at State Mutual Stadium.
