HARBIN CLINIC CANCER CENTER NAMED CANCER PRACTICE OF THE YEAR BY GEORGIA SOCIETY OF CLINICAL ONCOLOGY

Harbin Clinic’s Tony E. Warren MD Cancer Center has been named the Cancer Practice of the Year for 2011 by the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (GASCO), the professional organization representing Georgia physicians specializing in cancer care, according to a Harbin Clinic media release.  Practice of the Year is GASCO’s highest award.

BERRY MEN FALL TO BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN IN COLLEGE HOOPS

In your local college basketball update, Berry College’s Vikings lost to no. 8 Birmingham Southern 69-58 in men’s hoops last night at Berry’s Cage Center.  
It will be a big night in local college basketball tomorrow night when Berry College and Shorter University meet for the second time this season in a cross-town showdown at Berry.  Berry’s Lady Vikings will take on Shorter’s number 22 Lady Hawks at 6 pm.  The Vikings will face the number one Hawks at 8 pm.  The games will be broadcast on both 95.7 FM The Ridge and WLAQ AM 1410 and on our websites, www.theridge957.com and www.wlaq1410.com.

ATLANTA HAWKS BEGIN ROAD TRIP WITH LOSS TO LA LAKERS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks kicked off a five game road trip with a loss to the LA Lakers 86-78 last night in LA.  That leaves the Hawks with 18 wins and 12 losses overall for the 2011-2012 season.  They have nine wins and five losses on the road.  The Hawks will be in Phoenix, Arizona to take on the Suns tonight at 9 pm.

ROME/FLOYD COUNTY AVOIDS WINTER WEATHER WORRIES

It appears that Rome and Floyd County and the surrounding area avoided the wintry precipitation predicted by weather forecasters for last night.  Temperatures stayed above freezing overnight.  Some .05 inches of rain fell at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field in Armuchee during the night, according to the National Weather Service.  A 90 percent chance of occasional rain has been predicted for today by the NWS, mainly before 1 pm.  Highs will be around 49.  Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low of 33.

HO– USE FIRE VICTIM IDENTIFIED

The victim of a house fire on Fosters Mill Road on Saturday evening has been identified.  Dorothy Nell Clonts, age 75, died at the scene just before 7 pm.  The fire began just after 5:30 pm.  Clonts’ husband had gone to the store.  She was smoking while using oxygen when the incident occurred.  Her cause of death has yet to be officially determined.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY RELEASES 2012 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Shorter University’s football schedule for 2012 has been released.  This will be Shorter’s first schedule as a non-NAIA member as the University continues its transition to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference.  It features nine NCAA opponents, five home games and a Thursday night primetime showdown against one of the Hawks’ newest GSC rivals, Valdosta State.

LEGISLATORS CONCERNED ABOUT ECONOMY; PRESIDENT RELEASES ELECTION YEAR BUDGET

The nation’s economy continues to be a concern for lawmakers.  US Senator Saxby Chambliss said in a recent interview on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome that a major focus for himself and his colleagues is putting Americans back to work.  He indicates that much has been done and continues to be done in the housing market and on infrastructure, in particular.
