THOMAS, LADY HAWKS EARN SSAC HONORS

And congratulations to Shorter University head softball coach Al Thomas, who has been named the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.  Congratulations also goes out to sophomore shortstop Jackie Castaneda, who has been named the 2012 SSAC Softball Player of the Year.  The pair took the honors last week at the league’s annual awards banquet in Columbus.

COOSA RIVER BASIN INITIATIVE TO HOST WATERFEST XII THIS WEEKEND

The Coosa River Basin Initiative will host Waterfest XII this Friday and Saturday, May 4th and 5th at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome.  The event will feature a 13-mile canoe and kayak race on the Oostanaula River, kayak and canoe tug-o-wars, Boy Scout canoe tug-o-wars, an environmental fair and reptile and raptor shows.  A new kayak from Blue Sky Outfitter in Rome will also be given away.  Get more information about the event by calling CRBI executive director Joe Cook at (706) 232-2724 or by emailing him at jcook@coosa.org.  You can also find out more at www.coosa.org.

GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL SIGNS ABORTION BILL INTO LAW

Governor Nathan Deal signed into law yesterday a pro-life bill intended to put an end to most abortions in Georgia after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the time when some believe a fetus can begin to feel pain.  HB 954 was sponsored by Representative Doug McKillip of Athens and Tommie Williams of Lyons, according to a release from the Governor’s office.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES IN SERIES OPENER AT ‘THE TED’

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 last night in the series opener between the teams at Turner Field.

SHIPMAN NAMED NATIONAL YOUNG REPUBLICAN WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Rome resident Layla Shipman has been named the National Young Republican Woman of the Year.  She received the honor this past weekend at a special event in Washington DC.  Shipman says that the National Young Republican organization is comprised of those ages 18-40 and represents the youth vote in this country.  She says that Georgia brought home four awards from their event in DC.  Not only was she named Woman of the Year, but Senator Josh McKoon from Columbus was named Man of the Year.  In addition, the Atlanta Young Republican organization was named Large Club of the Year and was honored for holding the Charitable Event of the Year.

BERRY COLLEGE THEATRE COMPANY HONORED BY KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATRE FESTIVAL

The Berry College Theatre Company students and faculty have been honored by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival adjucator for their contributions to the recent production of “The Last Night of Ballyhoo”.

MATHERLY NAMED HEAD BOYS BASKETBALL COACH AT PEPPERELL HIGH

Skip Matherly will return to Floyd County to serve as the new head coach for the Pepperell boys basketball team.  Matherly coached the Rome High girls from 1998-2003.  He will replace Steve Horne, who retired from coaching after last season.  Matherly will leave his post as head boys coach at Wesleyan in Norcross to take the job at Pepperell.

ROME BRAVES ON THE ROAD AGAIN

The Rome Braves had the day off yesterday and will return to action tonight with a seven game road trip that will include three games in Hagerstown, Maryland with the Suns and four games in Greenville, South Carolina against the Drive.  Tonight’s game one against the Suns will get underway at 7:05 pm at Hagerstown’s Municipal Stadium and will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.
