SHORTER SWEEPS, BERRY SPLITS IN COLLEGE BASEBALL

Shorter University’s baseball Hawks hardily swept Reinhardt University in a double header yesterday at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex, 9-2 and 13-0.  The Hawks will return to action this weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana with a three game series against Southern States Athletic Conference rival Loyola University.

The deadline for entries into the 3rd annual 95.7 FM The Ridge/Rome News-Tribune Battle of the Bands has been extended.  Local bands now have until Friday, March 2nd to enter the contest by submitting an mp3 of their best song, a short bio and contact information to mattd@theridge957.com.

PEPPERELL MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES LOWE’S TOOLBOX FOR EDUCATION GRANT

Pepperell Middle School is one of 20 Georgia schools to receive a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.  The schools received grants during the fall 2011 grants cycle, which encompassed more than 585 schools and parent organizations that were awarded a grant for parent-initiated school improvement projects benefiting K-12 public education across the country, according to a Lowe’s media release.

ATLANTA HAWKS DROP PRESIDENT’S DAY GAME TO CHICAGO BULLS ON THE ROAD

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Chicago Bulls 90-79 in a President’s Day game yesterday in Chicago.  The Hawks have only netted one win and three losses so far in their current road series.  They’ll close out their five-game road trip with a stop in New York to take on the Knicks tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.

LOCAL STATE FARM AGENT TERRY SIMMONS TO BE HONOREE AT 4TH ANNUAL HEART OF THE COMMUNITY WALK THIS SATURDAY

The 4th annual Heart of the Community Walk is set for this Saturday, February 25th in downtown Rome.  Pre-walk festivities will be held at 9:30 am at Citizens First Bank, with the walk set to begin at 10 am.

GEORGIA TO PARTNER WITH GOOGLE TO HELP SMALL BUSINESSES

Governor Nathan Deal has announced a partnership with Google that will offer free websites to small businesses throughout Georgia.  “Georgia Get Your Business Online” is intended to help drive economic growth by giving businesses statewide the tools and resources to establish a website, find new customers and grow, according to a release from the Governor’s office.

We’ll have high school basketball playoff action on the radio for you this Friday evening.  WLAQ AM 1410 will be at Darlington as the Lady Tigers host the winner of the upcoming Greenforest Christian/Holy Innocents game in a Class A match up at 7 pm.  The game will also be aired online at www.wlaq1410.com.  We’ll have coverage on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com as the Model girls host Union County at 6 pm in Class AA action.

Tune in for Berry College basketball tonight on WLAQ AM 1410.  The Vikings and Lady Vikings will close out the 2011-2012 season against Covenant College at the Cage Center on the Berry College campus.  The women will play at 6 pm, followed by the men at 8 pm.  The games will also be broadcast online at www.wlaq1410.com.
