ATLANTA HAWKS TO FACE BOSTON CELTICS IN GAME THREE OF EASTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS IN BOSTON TONIGHT

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks will face the Boston Celtics tonight in game three of the Eastern Conference playoffs in Boston.  Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.  The best of seven series is currently tied at a game apiece.

FINSTER FEST SET FOR THIS WEEKEND IN SUMMERVILLE

Finster Fest, one of North Georgia’s most popular folk art and music festivals, will be held this Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th at Dowdy Park in Summerville.  This year marks the grand re-opening of Paradise Garden, which was Howard Finster’s studio and is now exhibited as a small museum.  Finster Fest 2012 will include musical entertainment from Roger Allen Wade, Patterson Hood of the Drive by Truckers and more.  The two day festival will also offer a shuttle to Paradise Garden for tours.  It will be open from 10 am until 6 pm on Saturday and from noon until 5 pm on Sunday.

GREATER ROME CHAMBER PLEDGES SUPPORT OF T-SPLOST

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors has announced its unanimous support for the State of Georgia Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST), which is up for a vote on July 31st.

ATLANTA BRAVES TAKE EXCITING EXTRA INNING VICTORY FROM PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Finally!  A win for the Atlanta Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies!  And an exciting one at that, as the Braves beat the Phillies by a score of 15-13 in 11 innings at Turner Field.  The Braves overcame a six run deficit in the fifth and a four run deficit in the eighth to aid them in their victory.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS TODAY

The Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament gets underway today and continues thru Tuesday at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.  Eight teams will play in the tournament, including West Georgia, West Alabama, West Florida, Alabama-Huntsville, Christian Brothers, Delta State, Valdosta State and North Alabama.  The tournament is being hosted by the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Rome Braves.

PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL SERVICE SET FOR FRIDAY

The Peace Officers Memorial Service is set for tomorrow (Friday, May 4th) at 11 am on the Fifth Avenue side of the Joint Law Enforcement Center Memorial Plaza in Rome. At the event, the Garden Lakes Elementary School fifth-grade chorus will sing the national anthem and “How Great Thou Art”.  Also, Floyd County Prison Warden Jeff Chandler will open it with the Pledge of Allegiance.  A multi-agency honor guard will present the colors.  Sergeant First Class Jerry Jude of the Georgia State Patrol will give the invocation, which will be followed by a welcome from City Commissioner Buzz Wachsteter.  County Commission Irwin Bagwell will read a joint proclamation declaring May 13-19 as National Police Week.  The honor roll will be read by Director Tim Bearden of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.  As the names of fallen officers are read, a family member will place a rose on the officers’ monument.  For more information about the event, call Major Denise Downer McKinney with the Rome Police Department at (706) 238-5111.

ROME BRAVES FALL TO HAGERSTOWN SUNS IN SERIES OPENER

The Rome Braves were defeated by the Hagerstown Suns 10-5 last night in the series opener between the teams in Hagerstown, Maryland.

NETO NAMED NEW MEN’S HEAD SOCCER COACH AT SHORTER

Shorter University athletics director Bill Peterson has announced that Paulo Neto has been named the university’s new head men’s soccer coach.  According to a Shorter sports release, Neto is a native of Brazil and former collegiate standout at Union College.  He comes to Shorter after a successful six-year head coaching tenure at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.  He replaces former head men’s coach Josh Severns, who stepped down earlier in the spring.
