FREEMAN HITS A PAIR OF HOMERS IN ATLANTA BRAVES’ SPRING TRAINING WIN OVER NEW YORK METS

In your Atlanta Braves Spring Training update, the Braves beat the New York Mets 7-5 yesterday in Port St. Lucie, Florida.  Freddie Freeman helped secure the win with two homers for the Braves, one in the seventh and another in the ninth.

SHORTER BASEBALL TAKES 10-INNING VICTORY OVER BRYAN COLLEGE

In your local college baseball update, Shorter University picked up a 9-8 victory in 10 innings over Bryan College in a non-league match-up yesterday at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.  The Hawks will return to action this weekend in Mt. Vernon, Georgia with a three-game series against Brewton Parker.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS TO TAKE THE STAGE IN CEDARTOWN THIS SATURDAY

The 3rd annual 95.7 FM The Ridge/Rome News-Tribune Battle of the Bands will take the stage at the Cedartown Performing Arts Center this Saturday night, March 31st, at 7:30 pm.  The list of competitors has been narrowed to the Top 5, thanks to an online voting process that was offered on the Rome News-Tribune’s website.  Matt D of Matt D and Mullins in the Morning on 95.7 FM The Ridge says those in attendance at Saturday’s event will be treated to some great musical entertainment.

FIRST LADY SANDRA DEAL TO ATTEND OPENING OF SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT AT CALHOUN’S HARRIS ARTS CENTER

Georgia’s First Lady Sandra Deal will be at the Harris Arts Center in Calhoun on Saturday, April 14th for a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the statewide tour of New Harmonies:  Celebrating American Roots Music, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition on the early traditions of American music.  According to a release from the Georgia Humanities Council, the exhibit will visit 12 communities in Georgia from April 14th, 2012 thru November 26th, 2013.  The statewide tour is being sponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council in partnership with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia, Georgia Council for the Arts, and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR BRAVES MIRACLE FIELD OF ROME

In other Braves news, the Rome Braves have announced that they, along with the Atlanta Braves Foundation and the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority, are currently accepting registration for athletes at the new Braves Miracle Field of Rome.  Registration forms are available online at www.romebraves.com and www.rfpra.com.  The cost is $50 per athlete, but scholarship opportunities are available, according to a Rome Braves media release.  Miracle Field athletes will be recognized on field at State Mutual Stadium before the Rome Braves game on Friday, April 13th.

BERRY COLLEGE SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH COVENANT

Berry College’s softball team split a double header with Covenant yesterday at Berry’s South Ford Field.  Berry won the opener 6-5, while Covenant took won the nightcap 10-7.  The Lady Vikings will host Piedmont in a double header this Saturday at noon.

POLK MEDICAL CENTER TO MARK TRANSFER OF MANAGEMENT TO FLOYD HEALTHCARE INC WITH SPECIAL EVENTS ON SUNDAY

A big day is ahead for this Sunday, April 1st at Polk Medical Center as the  hospital marks the transfer of its management to Floyd Healthcare Management, Inc.  According to a release from Floyd Medical Center, a flag raising ceremony will begin the day at 7 am at the hospital as a visual representation of Polk Medical Center’s becoming a part of the Floyd family.  The Floyd Emergency Medical Services Honor Guard will lead the ceremony  as the American and Floyd flags are raised over the facility.  A health fair will be held later that day to showcase services available at Polk Medical Center.  It is scheduled from 2 pm until 5 pm in the hospital’s parking lot under an enclosed tent.  There will be a number of health screenings and other offerings at the health fair (at no cost), including blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, height, weight, body mass index, balance, stroke risk assessment, EKG, lung function, grip strength and child identification kits.

TELLUS LUNCH AND LEARN TO FEATURE TALK ON PHOTOMICROGRAPHY

The Tellus:  Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville will hold the next installment in their Lunch and Learn series tomorrow (Wednesday, March 28th) as museum curator Julian Gray will speak on “Photography Through The Microscope”.  Marketing director Joe Schulman says the topic will be photomicrography.  The lecture will begin at 12:15 pm in the museum’s private dining room.
