REDDICK CHOSEN NEW CITY COMMISSIONER

The Rome City Commission has tapped Detrick Redding to be their new commissioner.  Redding was chosen last night at the regular meeting of the Rome City Commission to fill the Ward Two post vacated by Duane Reid at the end of February.  He will be sworn into office at the Commission’s next meeting on May 21st.

If you’re a runner, register now for the Redmond Road Mile.  The event is set for Saturday, May 19th.  It will get underway at 8 am at 210 Redmond Road in front of the Harbin Clinic Rehab Center.  Harbin Vitality Center director Jay Stephenson urges the public to participate, from novices all the way to seasoned runners, in this race which will benefit Rome Action Ministries.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO CHICAGO CUBS IN SERIES OPENER

The Atlanta Braves were hoping to keep the momentum going from their three game sweep of the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, but were stopped short last night by the Chicago Cubs as the Cubs beat the Braves 5-1 in the opening game of a three game series at Wrigley Field.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY BASEBALL HAWKS HEADED FOR NATIONALS!!!

Shorter University’s baseball Hawks are headed out west after being granted an at large bid to participate in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round.  It will be the 18th ranked Hawks’ first postseason appearance since 2003, according to a Shorter sports release.  Shorter, who finished fourth in the Southern States Athletic Conference regular season standings and third at the SSAC Tournament a couple of weeks ago, are headed for Los Angeles, California after nabbing the number two seed in the Azusa Bracket.  They’ll begin Opening Round play on Thursday at 6:30 pm Eastern Time against third-seeded College of Idaho from Caldwell, Idaho.  If the Hawks make it past opening round play, they’ll be on their way to Lewiston, Idaho for their first ever NAIA World Series appearance.

FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET TODAY

The Floyd County Commission will meet in regular session today.  They’ll convene in a caucus session at 1 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 2 pm at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  Take a look at their agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

NBA PLAYOFF ACTION TO RETURN TO PHILIPS ARENA TONIGHT

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks will host the Boston Celtics tonight in game five of the Eastern Conference playoffs.  Tip off is set for 8 pm at the Philips Arena.  The Celtics currently lead the series three games to the Hawks’ one.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT CONCLUDES TODAY AT STATE MUTUAL STADIUM

The Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament, which got underway on Friday, concludes today at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.  Delta State will face North Alabama at 10 am.  The winner of that game will head to the Championship game against Alabama-Huntsville at 1 pm.
