SHORTER UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR NEW RESIDENCE FACILITY

Shorter University is working with architects on plans for a new 100-bed student residence facility.  According to a Shorter media release, the facility will provide much-needed student living space for the university.
University President Dr. Donald Dowless says, “Shorter University has had tremendous growth, and in the fall of 2011, our record enrollment included approximately 120 students who wanted to live on campus that we were unable to accommodate with on-campus living.  The student experience is enriched by being part of the campus community, and we are excited that this new construction will allow us to have even more of our student population reside in our Christ-centered campus enviroment.”

WINNING NIGHT FOR SHORTER UNIVERSITY

It was a victorious night for Shorter University over Brewton Parker in a couple of Southern States Athletic Conference East Division basketball games at Shorter’s Winthrop King Centre last night.  The 24th ranked Lady Hawks beat the Lady Barons 78-41.  The number one Hawks remain undefeated with their 20th straight win over the Barons 97-70.  

COLLEGE BASEBALL BEGINS FOR SHORTER THIS WEEKEND

College baseball is on tap for this weekend!  The Shorter University Hawks will be down in Florida to take on Southeastern Florida.  According to www.goshorterhawks.com, today’s game has been canceled.  Tomorrow’s double header will get underway at noon.

UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the preliminary unemployment rate for metro Rome rose to 10.4 percent in December, up from 10.3 percent in November.  Metro Rome’s jobless rate was 10.6 percent in December 2010.  

RUSSIAN DOCTORS PAY VISIT TO ROME

A group of doctors from Russia are in town as part of a tour of medical facilities in North Georgia.  They want to learn about American health care.  The visit to Rome is being hosted by the Rome Rotary Club, in partnership with Redmond Regional Medical Center, Floyd Medical Center and the Harbin Clinic.  The Russian doctors visited Gainesville earlier this week.  The group includes Doctors Irina Kobernyuk, Svetlana Ermakova, Elena Kanaeva, Sergey Osanksin and Denis Makhankov.  Their visit here will culminate with a reception at the Harbin Clinic’s Tony E. Warren MD Cancer Center this evening.

MORE RAIN HEADED OUR WAY

Guess what, Romans?  More rain is on the way.  The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch from this evening through late tonight.  This area could get some one to three inches of rain this evening and overnight.  The NWS says that rainfall amounts of two to four inches have fallen over the area of concern during the past seven days, leaving behind moist soil conditions.  This could allow run off into nearby streams, creeks and rivers, causing rapid rises and minor flooding of smaller creeks, streams and low-lying flood-prone areas.  
Rain is expected to move into the area this afternoon and last through early tomorrow.

HOSPITALITY HO– USE FOR WOMEN HAS BUSY 2011, MAKING PLANS FOR 2012

The Hospitality House for Women continues their mission of providing a place of refuge for women in crisis and their children.  Executive Director Amy Weaver says that the year 2011 was a busy one that ended with a challenge in the form of the F2 tornado that hit Floyd County, causing substantial damage to the organization’s Thrift Store in the IGA shopping center on Shorter Avenue.
Weaver says that Hospitality House has a number of events on tap for the month of February, which is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
