ROME BRAVES TO BEGIN SECOND HALF OF 2012 SEASON IN ASHEVILLE, NC WITH SERIES AGAINST THE TOURISTS; NEW PLAYERS ADDED TO BRAVES ROSTER

The South Atlantic League All Star break has drawn to a close, and the Rome Braves will begin the second half of the 2012 season this evening with a four game series in Asheville, North Carolina against the Tourists that continues thru Sunday.  First pitch of tonight’s game is set for 7:05 pm at Asheville’s McCormick Field.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.

Today is the first day of summer.  It is the longest day of the year.  The days will begin to get shorter from here on out.  The summer solstice will occur at 7:09 pm this evening.  While summer begins today here in the Northern Hemisphere of the planet, the winter begins in the Southern Hemisphere.

ROME EXCHANGE CLUB TO WELCOME NATIONAL EXCHANGE PRESIDENT TO TOWN ON FRIDAY

The Rome Exchange Club will welcome National Exchange President Sid Mobley to town this Friday, June 22nd.  While in Rome, Mobley will attend a luncheon at the Exchange Club Family Resource Center.  That evening, he will induct the new officers and board members of the Exchange Club of Rome.

ATLANTA BRAVES END NEW YORK YANKEES’ WINNING STREAK AT YANKEE STADIUM

Guess what, Atlanta Braves fans?!?  The Braves have ended the New York Yankees’ winning streak!  The Braves snapped their own three game losing streak and kept the Yankees from getting their 11th straight win with a 4-3 victory last night in game two of a three game series at Yankee Stadium.

HOME RUN DERBY AT YANKEE STADIUM AS ATLANTA BRAVES PICK UP SECOND WIN IN A ROW OVER NEW YORK YANKEES

The Atlanta Braves took their second victory in a row from the New York Yankees 10-5 yesterday afternoon in the series closer between the teams at Yankee Stadium.  It was a virtual home run derby, with a total of nine homers between the Braves and the Yankees.  Freddie Freeman, Martin Prado, Jason Heyward, and David Ross all homered for the Braves in yesterday’s game.  
Derek Jeter, Eric Chavez, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano all hit homers for the Yankees in yesterday’s game.  And, again, the Braves beat the Yankees by a final score of 10-5.  Tommy Hanson got the win for the Braves.

GNTC TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL ROME’S INCREDIBLE RACE

Something pretty amazing will be taking place in downtown Rome on Saturday, June 30th.  Georgia Northwestern Technical College will host the first annual Rome’s Incredible Race to benefit local charities Cancer Navigators and Summit Quest Adventures.  Rome’s Incredible Race will consist of 60 teams of two people, ages 12 and older, who will race around downtown Rome, facing challenges of brains and brawn while outsmarting other contestants for a shot at the grand prize of an iPad 2.  Prizes will also be given for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places.

NORTH TOPS SOUTH IN 53RD ANNUAL SALLY LEAGUE ALL STAR GAME IN CHARLESTON, SC

The North beat the South in the 2012 South Atlantic League All Star Game.  The Sally League’s Northern Division took a 3-2 win from the Southern Division in the 53rd annual All Star Game last night in Charleston, South Carolina, home of the Riverdogs (of the Southern Division).  The Rome Braves were represented on the Southern Division team by pitchers David Filak and Navery Moore.  Filak was tagged with the loss in last night’s game after allowing one run on two hits with one strike out in one inning of work – he pitched during the fifth inning.  Moore pitched one scoreless inning (in the sixth).  The Northern Division scored one run each in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.  The Southern Division rallied for a comeback in the ninth with two runs, but that’s all they were able to manage and, again, the Northern Division ended up beating the Southern Division by a final score of 3-2.

UNIQUE ITEMS AUCTIONED OFF AT NEW THREE RIVERS AUCTION COMPANY

Auction enthusiasts and self-proclaimed “pickers” will want to check out the new Three Rivers Auction Company located in Mount Berry Square Mall.  The company is set to hold its second auction this Saturday, June 23rd at 6 pm.  Donovan Murphy, owner of Three Rivers Auction Company, says that his company is the first of its kind in Rome.  He said that attendees at the first auction a couple of weeks ago went home with some rare items, including a first edition copy of Margaret Mitchell’s classic novel Gone With The Wind.  He says even more unique items will be auctioned off this Saturday evening, including furniture from the late 1700s to 1950s, collectibles, jewelry and more.
