SLAIN CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER MARTIN LUTHER KING JR TO BE HONORED LOCALLY WITH KING CELEBRATION WEEKEND

Martin Luther King Jr Day is coming up on Monday, January 21st.  The MLK Commission of Rome and Northwest Georgia has planned a plethora of events all throughout this weekend during its annual King Celebration Weekend.
The celebration will begin on Friday night (January 18th) with a “Musical Extravaganza”, which will feature dance, music and acting.  The event is set for 6:30 pm at the Rome City Auditorium.  It is free and open to the public.

HIGHWAY 411 CONNECTOR TO BE DISCUSSED IN CARTERSVILLE ON THURSDAY EVENING

The proposed Highway 411 Connector will be the topic of discussion this Thursday night at a meeting to be held in Cartersville by the Coalition for the Right Road.  The meeting is set for 6:30 pm at the Church at Liberty Square at 2001 Liberty Square Drive.  The guest speaker will be GDOT Board Member Jeff Lewis.  Dinner will be provided by Chic-Fil-A.  The Highway 411 Connector will be discussed with an open question and answer session.  The event is free and open to the public.

HAWKS FALL TO BULLS IN CHI-TOWN

The Atlanta Hawks lost to the Chicago Bulls 97-58 last night in Chicago.  With the loss, the Hawks fall to 21-16 on the season.  They have lost seven out of their last 10 games.  The Hawks will return to their home court at the Philips Arena to host the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.  The game will be televised on Sport South.

The rain continues to fall in Rome and Northwest Georgia.  The National Weather Service has reported two and a half inches of rain at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport from late Sunday night thru early this morning.  The flood watch issued yesterday by the NWS remains in effect through tomorrow morning.

ATLANTA FALCONS READY FOR NFC CHAMPIONSHIP

Falcons fever is in the air as the Atlanta Falcons prepare to take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.  The Falcons will host the title game on Sunday at 3 pm at the Georgia Dome.  The Dirty Birds punched their ticket to the NFC championship with an exciting 30-28 divisional round win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at the Dome.  It was the Falcons’ first playoff win since the 2004 season.  If they win Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, they will be headed for the Super Bowl – something they haven’t done since the 1998 season.

MCLEAN NAMED SAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Speaking of college basketball, the Southern Athletic Association has honored Berry College’s Mel McLean as its women’s basketball Player of the Week for games played from January 7th -13th.  McLean is a sophomore guard from Cave Spring and a graduate of Coosa High School.
