NEWS OF POPE’S IMPENDING RETIREMENT SHOCKING TO THE WORLD AND LOCALLY
This week began with big news for Catholics and the world in general with the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI will retire at the end of this month.
The shock felt by Catholics around the world has certainly been experienced locally. Deacon Stuart Neslin with St. Mary’s Catholic Church says many of his parishioners are concerned for the Pope’s health.
Neslin anticipates that a new Pope will be selected by Holy Week and Easter, which is at the end of March.
Pope Benedict XVI is the first Pope to retire in nearly 600 years. The last was Gregory XII in 1415.
