Residents of Rome and Floyd County, like many people across the nation, are reaching out to assist those in Texas who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.  Efforts are additionally being made to provide for the needs of those impacted by the storm in Louisiana.

The American Red Cross is on the front lines of the disaster with provisions of shelter, food and other necessities for storm victims.  Miguel Trivino, chairman of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Georgia chapter of the Red Cross, says that safety is their top priority.

The best way for local residents to support the Red Cross’ relief efforts is to make a donation to the organization, adds Trivino.  Making a donation is as simple as texting the word “HARVEY” to 90999 to contribute $10.  You can also donate online at www.redcross.org or 1-800-RED-CROSS.  Trivino says that interested parties can keep up with relief efforts of local volunteers via Facebook; search for American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia.

The Museum of Flight is among the local organizations currently doing their part to provide relief to storm victims in Texas.

Matt DeVille, Development Director, says that the museum is using ground vehicles, as well as aircraft, to deliver goods to those impacted by Harvey.

Would you like to donate items for the Museum of Flight to take to Texas?  Bring your bottled water, toilet paper, non-perishable food and/or medical supplies to the museum at Rome’s Russell Regional Airport during regular business hours.

Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter and the rest of the Sheriff’s Office is also leading a local effort to gather necessities and financial contributions for those impacted by Harvey.  The effort is dubbed “Rome GA Cares”; for details, search for the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook.
