LOCALS CAMPAIGN FOR RAY DONALDSON TO BE INDUCTED IN TO PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

Written by Matt Davis on October 5, 2017. Posted in Sports

He’s already been enshrined in the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.  Now a group of local sports enthusiasts want to ensure that former East Rome High School football and NFL standout Ray Donaldson is immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Donaldson is one of 108 modern-era NFL players that have been nominated for potential induction into the Hall in Canton, Ohio.  The list will be reduced to 25 semifinalists in November, from which 15 finalists will be named in January.  Fans in Rome, Georgia and across the nation can cast their ballot for Donaldson online at www.nfl.com/hofvote.

Ray Donaldson made history as the NFL’s first African-American to start at center.  He muses that in order for an offensive lineman to gain entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he either must be well-liked or have played for a team that won a lot of games.

Donaldson earned All-American and All-State honors during his time at East Rome High School.  He went on to play for UGA and nabbed accolades as an All-American and All-SEC standout.  His career in the NFL began in 1980 with the Colts; he played for Baltimore and Indianapolis until 1992.  He also played for the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys before retiring from professional football in 1996.

A Facebook page has been established whereby fans can track Donaldson’s journey to the Hall.  Search for Ray Donaldson Goes to Canton.

Former UGA standouts Herschel Walker and Hines Ward are also contenders for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
