Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts paid a visit to Berry College yesterday.  She delivered a speech, “An Insider’s View of Washington DC”, as part of the college’s Gloria Shatto Lecture Series.  Prior to her lecture, she toured the Berry campus and answered questions from local media during a press conference.  When asked about some of the things an insider might know about DC that the average American wouldn’t, she said that things have changed over the years.  She says that politicians are far less friendly with each other than they used to be.

Roberts fielded questions about politics, this year’s Presidential race and more.  She also had some words of wisdom for students at Berry (or any students) who are interested in entering the field of journalism.  She said that it is good that they are studying at a quality liberal arts college, and encouraged them to continue their education.

Roberts was the co-anchor of “This Week with Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts” from 1996-2002.  She has won numerous awards over her more than 40 years in the broadcasting business, including three Emmys.  She is a member of the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and was named by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting.  Roberts has written several books, including a New York Times bestseller called “From This Day Forward” with her husband, Steven V. Roberts.

Berry College’s Gloria Shatto Lecture Series is named in honor of Georgia’s (and Berry’s) first female college president.
