The Rome Downtown Development Authority will continue its Downtown Saturdays series with the inaugural Spirit of the Sun Festival on Saturday in downtown Rome.

Spirit of the Sun is intended to highlight Rome’s natural beauty and the three rivers that run through its downtown.  It will feature a fishing tournament and a paddle race; these will be followed by a free concert featuring Mario Diaz at Bridgepoint Plaza on Saturday night.

This full day of activities will commence with registration for the Kingfisher Classic fishing tournament at 6 am, states Megan Treglown, PR Director for the Rome DDA, who adds that the Coosa River Basin Initiative is providing assistance with (and will benefit from proceeds of) the tournament as well as the Chieftain’s Challenge paddle race.

Treglown adds that yoga sessions will offered free of charge from 1 pm until 5 pm at Bridgepoint Plaza.  For a cost of $40, you can take a ride aboard the Sweetwater Barge; tickets are available at www.freshtix.com.

No coolers or outside drinks will be permitted at the Bridgepoint Plaza party on Saturday evening; armbands will be available at Moe’s Original BBQ and River Dog Outpost to those over 21 years of age.

The Spirit of the Sun Festival is made possible by the business and property owners that make up the downtown Business Improvement District (or BID).  Treglown says that you can thank BID members simply by patronizing their respective businesses.
