The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of an evaluation program to verify compliance with national standards and achieve recertification.

According to an FCSO press release, the accreditation program is administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).  It requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas to include policy procedure, administration, operations and support services.

Sheriff Tim Burkhalter attests, “The goal of the assessment team is to evaluate and verify that the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office meets and complies with all of the Commission’s standards.  CALEA accreditation is a highly prized recognition for any law enforcement and public safety organization.  This is a voluntary process to insure professional excellence for our community and its citizens.”

Employees of the agency and the general public are invited to provide their feedback by calling (706) 314-6219 on Monday, July 24th between the hours of 3 pm and 5 pm.

Comments may be offered in person during a public information session scheduled for Tuesday, July 25th at 6 pm in the Oostanaula Room of the Rome-Floyd County Library on Riverside Parkway.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session will be limited to 10 minutes and must address the FCSO’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  A copy of the standards is available at the Sheriff’s Office.  Those who would like more information are directed to call Corporal Carrie Edge at (706) 314-0708.
