FLOYD COUNTY SEED SWAP SET FOR SATURDAY AT CHIEFTAINS MUSEUM/MAJOR RIDGE HOME

Written by Matt Davis on February 9, 2018. Posted in News/Weather

Here is a reminder that the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home will play host to the 5th annual Floyd County Seed Swap, in addition to a Family Free Day at the museum, this Saturday.

According to a Chieftains media release, the Seed Swap is an informal event co-sponsored by the museum along with the Berry College Environmental Studies Program, Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful, Action Ministries Rome, the Rome Federated Garden Club and Rome Master Gardeners.  The purpose of the event is to encourage the production and protection of heirloom seeds and plant varieties that are at risk of being lost in order to provide a sustainable and diverse landscape in the community.

Cherokees like Major Ridge saw seed saving as particularly important in order to sustain his family through the winter months and provide crops for spring and summer.

The program will begin with a presentation from 11 am until noon about how to properly save seeds by Dr. Brian Campbell, Director of the Berry College Environmental Studies Program.  After the presentation, garden enthusiasts may share or trade seeds, cuttings, bulbs and plants with other members of the communityat the museum until 2 pm.

Free admission will be offered at the museum during the entire day for those interested in seeing what the Seed Swap and museum are all about.
