DON’T FORGET TO FALL BACK THIS WEEKEND!  AND CHANGE THE BATTERY IN YOUR SMOKE ALARM!

Written by Matt Davis on November 1, 2018. Posted in News/Weather

The annual switch from Daylight Saving Time back to Standard Time occurs this Sunday, November 4th at 2 am.  The clocks will be set back one hour – as in ‘fall back’.

Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens is urging residents statewide to change the batteries in their smoke alarms at the same time that they change their clocks back to Standard Time.

According to a release from the Commissioner’s office – in conjunction with the “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” fire safety program which is sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Hudgens says that the annual change from daylight saving time to standard time can serve as a good reminder to make sure your smoke alarm is working properly.  If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced.

Hudgens states, “If you have a smoke alarm, make sure it’s in working order.  Changing the battery per the manufacturer’s recommendations and cleaning dust from the device are simple ways to ensure continued protection of your family and your property.”

In 2017, approximately 110 residential fires in Georgia resulted in a total of 129 deaths.  Of those fires, 99 of the homes did not have a working smoke alarm.  This year, 80 Georgians have died in 67 residential fires; only three of them had a working smoke alarm.
