Local schools and other institutions remain closed today as a precautionary measure as remnants of Irma move through the area.

Floyd County and Rome City Schools will be closed today, as will both school systems’ central office.  The Rome Board of Education meeting that had been scheduled for today has been moved to next Tuesday; it will start at the normal meeting time of 5:45 pm.  Darlington School, Unity Christian School and St. Mary’s Catholic School all remain closed today.

Georgia Highlands College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Shorter University are all closed today, while classes will resume per normal at Berry College.

Northwest Georgia Public Health facilities remain closed today.

While it appears that Greater Rome dodged a severe weather bullet, this area still received a substantial amount of rainfall throughout the day and into the night on Monday.  The National Weather Service reported just over three and a quarter inches of rain at the Russell Regional Airport from about 8 am on Monday morning through just before 5 am this morning.

All watches and warnings posted by the NWS for our area pertaining to Irma have been cancelled.

Numerous power outages across the state have resulted from stormy weather.  Georgia Power is slated to begin a full-scale assessment today.
