CHIEFTAINS MUSEUM/MAJOR RIDGE HOME TO HOST FLOYD COUNTY SEED SWAP ON SATURDAY

Written by Matt Davis on February 16, 2017. Posted in News/Weather

The Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home will host the 4th annual Floyd County Seed Swap in conjunction with a Family Free Day at the museum this Saturday, February 18th.

According to a Chieftains media release, the Seed Swap is an informal event co-sponsored by the museum along with the Berry College Environmental Studies Program, Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful, Action Ministries Rome, the Rome Federated Garden Club and Rome Master Gardeners.  The purpose of the event is to encourage the production and protection of heirloom seeds and plant varieties that are at risk of being lost with the goal of providing a sustainable and diverse landscape in the community.

Activities will begin with a presentation from 11 am until noon about how to properly save seeds by Dr. Brian Campbell, Director of the Berry College Environmental Studies Program.  Following his presentation, garden enthusiasts will have a chance to share or trade seeds, cuttings, bulbs and plants with other members of the community at the museum until 2 pm.  The Barbaric Yawps, a bluegrass band from Berry College, will provide musical accompaniment.

Free admission will be offered at the museum all day long this Saturday in conjunction with the Seed Swap.  Information about Cherokee plants and agriculture will be dispensed to attendees.  There will also be activities and crafts for kids of all ages.

For more information about Seed Swap/Family Free Day and other events of the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home, call the museum at (706) 291-9494 or visit www.chieftainsmuseum.org.
