SHORTER HAWKS NAB FIRST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT TITLE; BOTH HAWKS AND LADY HAWKS HEADED FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS

The Shorter University Hawks’ amazing 2011-2012 was capped off with a its first ever Southern States Athletic Conference tournament title as the Hawks beat Belhaven 89-71 in the SSAC championship game on Saturday night at the Forum in downtown Rome.  Shorter advanced to the championship game after a 63-50 win over Faulkner in the semifinal round on Friday night.  Both the Hawks, who are the number 2 team in the NAIA and were the East Division’s top seed in the SSAC tourney, and Belhaven, the West Division’s number 3 seed, have made it to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, set for March 14th thru 20th in Kansas City, Missouri.  Jim Bojo will provide coverage of the Hawks in the NAIA tourney on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

AREA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAMS’ PLAYOFF RUNS STOP AT ELITE EIGHT

Three area girls high school basketball teams remained in the hunt for a state title as we headed into the weekend, and all three have since been eliminated from the playoffs in Elite Eight games.

ATLANTA HAWKS NAB A PAIR OF WEEKEND WINS AT PHILIPS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks nabbed a couple of home victories over the weekend, 99-94 over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday and 97-90 over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night at the Philips Arena.  The Hawks will hit the road to take on the Indiana Pacers tomorrow night at 7 pm.

ATLANTA BRAVES DROP FIRST TWO GAMES OF 2012 SPRING TRAINING TO DETROIT TIGERS

The Atlanta Braves lost their first two Spring Training games of 2012 to the Detroit Tigers down in Florida, 2-0 on Saturday at Lake Buena Vista and 18-3 yesterday in Lakeland.  Today is a new day – with a new opponent.  The Braves will face the Houston Astros today at 1:05 pm in Kissimmee.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: SHORTER SWEEPS, BERRY SPLITS OVER THE WEEKEND

Shorter University’s baseball Hawks swept a three game series with Emmanuel at home over the weekend.  They took a 11-1 victory in Friday’s game, which was followed by back-to-back 2-1 and 5-4 walk-off wins in Saturday’s double header at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.  The Hawks will get back into action as host to Milligan tomorrow at 2 pm.  Berry College’s Vikings baseball team split a double header with Denison at Berry’s William R. Bowdoin Field on Saturday.  Denison won the first game 8-0, while Berry cleaned up in the nightcap 19-2.  Berry will return to action at Emory tomorrow at 2 pm.

SO FAR SO GOOD FOR BERRY SOFTBALL AT NTC CLASSIC

So far so good for Berry College’s Lady Vikings softball team at the NTC Classic, which continues thru Wednesday in Clermont, Florida.  On Saturday, they posted a pair of wins over Grove City 10-4 and Wartburg 4-3.  That was followed by two more wins yesterday, 10-2 over DeSales and 8-0 over Susquehanna.  They’ll get back into action in the Classic tomorrow with matches against Moravian and Elizabethtown.

SPORTS TALK SATURDAY TO BE REVIVED ON WLAQ AM 1410 TOMORROW

Get ready to talk to your radio again!  A Rome radio tradition is being revived and this time, the torch (or microphone, if you will) is being passed to a new generation.  Matt Davis will be joined by Scott Wheeler in a revival of “Rome’s truly illegitimate sports show”, Sports Talk Saturday, a program made popular by ‘Matt D’s dad, Randy, and Wheeler in the 90s.  Sports Talk Saturday will once again hit airwaves of Talk Radio WLAQ AM 1410 tomorrow, Saturday, March 3rd.
