NCAA FINAL FOUR SET

The Final Four has been set for the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship.  Kentucky will take on Louisville and Ohio State will go head to head with Kansas this Saturday night.  The winners of each will go on the Championship game on Monday, April 2nd in New Orleans.

Shorter University head men’s basketball coach Chad Warner has been selected as one of 15 finalists for the John McLendon National Coach of the Year, according to a release from CollegeInsider.com on Wednesday night.  The John McLendon award is presented annually to the top collegiate head coach encompassing all levels.  Other finalists for this year’s award include John Calipari from the University of Kentucky, Tom Izzo from Michigan State University, Frank Haith from the University of Missouri, Mike Brey from the University of Notre Dame and others.  The winner will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet on March 30th in New Orleans, site of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

BRAVES BEAT: JONES ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT AT END OF 2012 SEASON, BRAVES AND MARLINS END UP WITH 5-5 TIE IN 10 INNINGS

Atlanta Brave Chipper Jones has announced his retirement from baseball at the end of the 2012 season.  Jones, who will be 40 years old on April 24th, has been with the Braves throughout his entire career.  Jones’ career highlights include seven All-Star games, the NL MVP award in 1999 and an NL batting title in 2008.  Jones was signed by the Braves in 1990 and has been a part of the major league team for the last 19 years.

LOCAL COLLEGE BASEBALL WEEKEND SCHEDULE

College baseball is on tap this weekend for local teams.  Shorter University will host the University of Mobile in a three game series at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.  The teams will play a double header tomorrow at noon, which will be followed by a solo game on Sunday at 1 pm.  Berry College’s Vikings will be on the road to take on Birmingham-Southern.  The teams will play a double header tomorrow at 2:30 pm, followed by a single game on Sunday at 2 pm.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL WEEKEND SCHEDULE

College softball will also be going on this weekend.  Shorter University’s Lady Hawks will host Brewton-Parker in a double header today at 5 pm, which will be followed by a double header with Truett McConnell tomorrow at 1 pm at the Alto Park Softball Complex.  Berry College’s Lady Vikings will host Centre in a double header tomorrow at 1 pm at Berry’s South Ford Field.

SHORTER’S HILL, BANKS AND ELLISON NAB NAIA BASKETBALL HONORS

The 2011-2012 season has drawn to a close for the Shorter University men’s and women’s basketball teams and has resulted in All-America accolades for a couple of Hawks and a Lady Hawk.  Walter Hill and Anthony Banks have been named to the 2011-2012 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball All-America Teams, the NAIA announced yesterday.  According to a Shorter sports release, Hill picked up a first team nod while Banks got honorable mention.  In addition, Kelly Ellison has been named a third team All-American, as revealed by the NAIA’s release of its annual Division I Women’s Basketball All-America Teams.  She is Shorter’s first-ever three-time women’s basketball All-American.

ATLANTA HAWKS TAKE EXCITING OT WIN OVER CLEVELAND CAVALIERS AT PHILIPS ARENA

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks picked up an exciting, down-to-the-last second (overtime!) win over the Cleveland Cavaliers 103-102 at the Philips Arena last night.  The Hawks’ Joe Johnson sent the game into overtime with a three point shot in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.  The game was neck and neck during that OT, and the Hawks ended up winning it with 18 seconds left in the game, again, by a score of 103-102.  The Hawks will welcome the New Jersey Nets to Atlanta tomorrow night for a 7:30 pm tip off.

ATLANTA BRAVES PICK UP 10 INNING WIN OVER WASHINGTON NATIONALS IN SPRING TRAINING

In Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves picked up a 3-2 win in 10 innings over the Washington Nationals in Spring Training action yesterday in Viera, Florida.   The Braves will host the Miami Marlins this afternoon at 1:05 pm at Champion Stadium at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista.
