SHORTER UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL PREPARING FOR SSAC TOURNEY; COVERAGE ON 95.7 FM THE RIDGE

Shorter University’s basketball teams are gearing up for the Southern States Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, which begin tomorrow with opening round play.  Men’s opening round and quarterfinals will be played at the Darlington School while women’s opening round and quarterfinals will be played at the Forum in downtown Rome tomorrow and Thursday.  Friday’s semifinal round and Saturday’s men’s and women’s championship games will all be played at The Forum.  Shorter’s Hawks are the SSAC East’s number one seed and will make their first appearance in this year’s tournament on Thursday at 6 pm at Darlington against the winner of tomorrow’s opening round game between East No. 5 seed Brewton-Parker and West No. 4 seed Mobile. The Lady Hawks are the SSAC East’s number two seed and will open the conference tournament on Thursday at 3 pm at the Forum in downtown Rome against West No. 3 seed Faulkner.

College softball is on tap for Shorter University today as the 9th ranked Lady Hawks  travel to Waleska, Georgia to take on Reinhardt University.  The double header will get underway at 3 pm.

SHORTER, BERRY BASEBALL TEAMS RETURN TO ACTION AT HOME TODAY

If you’re in the mood to watch some baseball today, you’ll have a couple of opportunities to do that on a collegiate level.  Shorter University’s Hawks baseball team will host Talladega College in a double header today at 1 pm at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.  Berry College’s Vikings baseball team will host Covenant this evening at 5 pm at the William R. Bowdoin Field on the Berry campus.

ROME FLOYD SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTS FOUR NEW MEMBERS

The Rome Floyd Sports Hall of Fame inducted four new members last night during a special banquet and awards ceremony at Berry College’s Krannert Center.  The 2012 inductees include Bob Williams for Meritorious Service, Mary Brock McMahon for Amateur Athletics, Willie Brown for Amateur Athletics and Dwight Henderson for Lifetime Achievement.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL CLOSES OUT 2011-2012 REGULAR SEASON ON VICTORIOUS NOTE, NOW READY FOR SSAC TOURNEY

Shorter University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out the 2011-2012 regular season with wins over Southern States Athletic Conference rival Truett McConnell in Cleveland, Georgia on Saturday.  The 20th ranked Lady Hawks beat the Lady Bears 92-25 to finish the regular season with a 25-5 overall record and 16-3 in the SSAC.  The number two Hawks topped the Bears 97-82 to end the regular season with 28 wins and 2 losses overall and 17 wins and only one loss in the SSAC.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY FINISHES ALABAMA ARCTIC BLAST WITH FIVE WINS AND TWO LOSSES, BERRY TAKES THREE OF FOUR AT RHODES COLLEGE CLASSIC

Shorter University’s softball team continued play in the Alabama Arctic Blast in  Decatur, Alabama over the weekend.  In scores from Friday, the number 9 Lady Hawks lost to Milligan 5-4 and beat Thomas 4-1.  On Saturday, the Lady Hawks beat Bryan 5-4 with an extra inning, which was followed by a loss to Martin Methodist 6-5.  They bounced back with an 8-0 shut out of Point University on Saturday evening.  Shorter’s softball team will return to action tomorrow in Waleska, Georgia with a double header against Reinhardt at 3 pm.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: SHORTER SWEEPS LOYOLA IN NEW ORLEANS, BERRY SPLITS WITH NORTH PARK AT HOME

Shorter University’s baseball team swept Southern States Athletic Conference rival Loyola University in a three game series over the weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The Hawks won Friday evening’s game 11-3 and both games of Saturday’s double header 15-0 and 9-3.  They’ll get back into action at home against Talladega College in a double header tomorrow at 1 pm at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
