ATLANTA HAWKS DROP THIRD STRAIGHT AT HOME TO PHOENIX SUNS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks dropped their third straight at home to the Phoenix Suns 99-90 at the Philips Arena last night.  The loss leaves the Hawks with an 8-4 record at home and a 16-10 record overall so far for the 2011-2012 season.  The Hawks continue their current homestand with a match against the Indiana Pacers tomorrow night at 7:30 pm at Philips.

We’ll have Berry College men’s basketball tomorrow night on WLAQ AM 1410 and www.wlaq1410.com as the Vikings travel to Maryville, Tennessee to take on Maryville College at 7:30 pm.  WLAQ AM 1410 will also provide coverage this Saturday as the Vikings and Lady Vikings host LaGrange at the Cage Center on the Berry College campus.  Tip off is set for 2 pm for the women and 4 pm for the men.  As with all our local sporting events, the games will be aired online at www.wlaq1410.com.

The New York Giants emerged as champs in Super Bowl 46 last night with a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Indianapolis.  Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning was named Super Bowl MVP; it was his second time to nab the honor.

COLLEGE HOOPS: VICTORIOUS SATURDAY IN SC FOR SHORTER UNIVERSITY; SHORTER’S NUMBER ONE HAWKS STAY PERFECT IN THE SSAC

In your local college basketball update from over the weekend, Shorter University’s number one Hawks managed to maintain a perfect record in the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 89-64 win over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, improving their record to 23-1 overall and 13-0 in the SSAC.  That was preceded by a 74-43 victory for Shorter’s Lady Hawks over Southern Wesleyan in Central, South Carolina.  Shorter’s men’s and women’s basketball teams return to their home court at the Winthrop King Centre on the Shorter University campus to host Emmanuel this Thursday night.  Tip off is set for 6 pm for the women and 8 pm for the men.  That will be followed by a 2 pm home game on Saturday for the Lady Hawks against Brenau.  All of those games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 98-87 on Saturday night at the Philips Arena.  That was the Hawks’ second straight home loss, leaving them with an eight win – three loss record at home and a 16 win – nine loss record overall so far for the 2011-2012 season.  The Hawks will get back into action tonight at Philips against the Phoenix Suns.  Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.

COLLEGE BASEBALL UPDATE: SHORTER SPLITS, BERRY TAKES TWO OF THREE OVER THE WEEKEND

Local college baseball teams took the field this past weekend.  
Shorter University’s Hawks played their first home games of the season  on Saturday against the University of Pikeville.  The teams the double-header, with Pikeville winning game one 2-0 and Shorter taking the night cap 12-2 at the Robert H. Ledbetter Field on the Shorter University campus.
The Hawks will host Bryan tomorrow at 1 pm in a single game that will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and online at www.theridge957.com.  

NUMBER ONE SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS’ WINNING STREAK ENDED BY POINT UNIVERSITY

The Shorter University mens’ basketball team’s season-long winning streak has come to an end as the previously undefeated and number one Hawks were narrowly defeated by Point University 73-72 in a non-conference match last night in East Point.  Shorter is still unbeaten in conference play.  The Hawks and the Lady Hawks will face Southern States Athletic Conference rival Southern Wesleyan tomorrow in Central, South Carolina.  The women will play at 2 pm, followed by the men at 4 pm.  The games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.
