FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS TO SHINE FOR A HANDFUL OF AREA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAMS TONIGHT

Friday night lights will shine tonight as area high school football teams take the field for week seven of the 2017 season.  Only a handful of local teams have games scheduled for this week; schools in Region 7-AA have the night off for Fall Break.

ATLANTA BRAVES EXERCISE OPTION ON BRIAN SNITKER FOR ’18

The Atlanta Braves announced on Thursday the decision to exercise their option on manager Brian Snitker for 2018.  He now prepares for what will be his 42nd straight season with the Braves organization.  Snitker was named Atlanta’s interim manager in May 2016 and assumed the post permanently upon the conclusion of the 2016 season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON AIR THIS SATURDAY

College football will return to the airwaves of WLAQ AM 1410 this Saturday evening as Alabama hits the road to take on SEC rival Texas A&M.  Kick off is set for 7:15 pm Eastern in College Station, Texas.  Air time for pre-game programming is 4:15 pm.

ROME TENNIS CENTER AT BERRY COLLEGE TO HOST GHSA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS STARTING IN ’18

The Georgia High School Association has announced that it will hold its State Tennis Championships at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College beginning next spring.

He’s already been enshrined in the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.  Now a group of local sports enthusiasts want to ensure that former East Rome High School football and NFL standout Ray Donaldson is immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

ATLANTA UNITED HANDED FIRST LOSS AT MERCEDES-BENZ STADIUM

Injury-plagued Atlanta United fell to Minnesota United 3-2 in Major League Soccer on Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  Atlanta United surrendered a couple of late-game goals in their first loss at the new stadium.  Two games remain in the regular season; AU will return to action on Sunday, October 15th on the road versus the New York Red Bulls.

COPPOLELLA OUT AS BRAVES’ GM

John Coppolella is out as the Atlanta Braves’ general manager.  Coppolella was forced to resign from the post on Monday due to a breach in MLB rules regarding the international player market.  Braves president John Hart will assume GM duties as the team searches for a replacement.
