RIBBON CUTTING FOR ARMUCHEE CONNECTOR SET FOR MAY 17

The Floyd County Commission has announced that a ribbon cutting ceremony has been set for the new Armuchee Connector at 9 am on Thursday, May 17th.  From that point, it will be open to traffic.  The Armuchee Connector runs from State Mutual Stadium to US 27 near Old Summerville Road.  It was funded by the 2006 SPLOST.

GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL APPROVES FY 2013 BUDGET

Governor Nathan Deal yesterday signed into law the 2013 budget, which will take effect upon the start of the fiscal year on July first.

REDDICK CHOSEN NEW CITY COMMISSIONER

The Rome City Commission has tapped Detrick Redding to be their new commissioner.  Redding was chosen last night at the regular meeting of the Rome City Commission to fill the Ward Two post vacated by Duane Reid at the end of February.  He will be sworn into office at the Commission’s next meeting on May 21st.

FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET TODAY

The Floyd County Commission will meet in regular session today.  They’ll convene in a caucus session at 1 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 2 pm at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  Take a look at their agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

REGISTER NOW FOR REDMOND ROAD MILE

If you’re a runner, register now for the Redmond Road Mile.  The event is set for Saturday, May 19th.  It will get underway at 8 am at 210 Redmond Road in front of the Harbin Clinic Rehab Center.  Harbin Vitality Center director Jay Stephenson urges the public to participate, from novices all the way to seasoned runners, in this race which will benefit Rome Action Ministries.

ROME CITY COMMISSION TO CHOOSE NEW COMMISSIONER THIS EVENING

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session this evening.  They’ll meet at 6:30 pm at City Hall in downtown Rome.  Commissioners are expected to fill the Ward Two post vacated at the end of February by Duane Reid.  Candidates for the job include:  George Anderson, Ralph Davis Jr., Shirley Denmon, Mike Finnegan, Tyrone Holland, Pete McDonald Jr., Steven McDowell Jr. and Detrick Redding.

GEORGIA’S BURN BAN BACK IN EFFECT

Georgia’s burn ban is back in effect for 54 counties, including Floyd.  It went into effect on May first.  Fire safety educator Daniel Carpenter with the Rome Fire Department says that the ban helps to make the air safer in the summer time.

ROME MAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK

A Rome man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Horseleg Creek Road yesterday evening.  Matthew Sean Warren, age 38 and of a Rosland Drive address, was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center just before 6 pm.  His 19-year-old son, Justin Matthew Warren, was injured in the incident.  The pair were reportedly riding their Harley Davidson motorcycles west on Horseleg Creek Road as a woman was backing her Buick out of a driveway she was using as a turn around.  The Warrens could not stop in time and slammed into the rear of the vehicle.  Both were taken by ambulance to Floyd Medical Center.  The younger Warren was released later in the evening.  An investigation into the incident continues.
