TEXTILE HISTORY DAY TO BE HELD AT CHIEFTAINS M– USEUM

The Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia will host a Textile History Day at the Chieftains Museum tomorrow.  According to a release from the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, representatives will be collecting the history of Rome’s mill communities through oral stories and old photographs.  Both former mill workers and family members are invited to bring their stories for inclusion.

UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN JUNE FOR GEORGIA FOR FIRST INCREASE IN NEARLY A YEAR

The Georgia Department of Labor has announced that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 9.0 percent in June, up from 8.9 percent in May, marking the first increase in nearly a year.  Georgia’s jobless rate stood at 9.9 percent in June 2011.

FLOYD COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO HOST RABIES VACCINATION CLINIC THIS SATURDAY

The Floyd County Health Department will conduct a rabies vaccination clinic this Saturday, July 21st from 1 pm until 3 pm at the health department at 16 East 12th Street.  The cost is just $10 per shot.  Dr. Richard Dixon with the East Rome Animal Clinic and Dr. Daniel Todd with the Mt. Berry Animal Clinic will administer the vaccinations, according to release from Floyd County Public Health.  The clinic is being sponsored by the health department and Floyd County Animal Control.

DOG DAYS LUNAR BIKE RIDE SET FOR FRIDAY NIGHT

The 18th annual Dog Days Lunar Bike Ride is set for this Friday night at Mount Berry Square Mall.  The event will be held from 10 pm until 1 am.  It is not a race of any kind and is open to all ages.  There will be pizza, watermelon, snacks and drinks.  Plus, a live DJ will provide entertainment.  The maximum registration price is $30 for an entire family (not including t-shirts).  For more information, visit www.cvca.org.

F&P GEORGIA TO EXPAND AGAIN, ADD 100 NEW JOBS

F&P Georgia has announced plans for yet another expansion.  The announcement was made at the Rome Floyd County Development Authority Meeting.  It is the company’s fifth major expansion in 11 years.  The machinery expansion will mean a $31 million capital investment and 100 new jobs.

MIXED OPINIONS ABOUT T-SPLOST REFERENDUM AHEAD OF JULY 31ST PRIMARY

The July 31st primary election is now less than two weeks away.  Even now, early voters are deciding the fate of local and state races.  Also on the ballot is the T-SPLOST.  Some are for the transportation referendum, stating that it will bring jobs and boost local economies.  Some are against it, for fear of yet another tax.  Many are still undecided.  Political consultant Adam Clemons, owner of ABC Design political consulting firm, says that the 411 connector is the main highlight of the T-SPLOST where local voters are concerned.  He also says that if it doesn’t pass this time around, it will come up again in two years.

ROME TEA PARTY LUNCH BUNCH HOLDS FINAL STRAW POLL PRIOR TO JULY 31ST PRIMARY

The Rome TEA Party Lunch Bunch held their final straw poll prior to the July 31st primary yesterday during their regular meeting at Fuddruckers.  Some 70 people weighed in on the candidates and the T-SPLOST referendum.  Many candidates were in attendance at the meeting.

NEW NON-PROFIT HOSPICE CARE FACILITY NOW SERVING NWGA RESIDENTS

A new non-profit hospice care facility has opened in Cartersville.  Kathy Cares is an inpatient hospice house, according to the organization’s Redonna Branton.
