MA RAINEY BLUES FESTIVAL TO HONOR ‘THE MOTHER OF THE BLUES’, THANKS TO DESOTO THEATRE FOUNDATION

If you’re a fan of blues music, you’ll want to head to the DeSoto Theatre this weekend for the Ma Rainey Blues Festival.  The two day festival is being presented by the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation and is intended to celebrate the life and music of Ma Rainey, “The Mother of the Blues”. Proceeds from the festival will support the restoration of the historic DeSoto Theatre.

LT. GOVERNOR’S BUSINESS AND EDUCATION SUMMIT COMING TO ROME

Education, business and industry leaders from across the state will converge upon Rome in November for the second annual Lieutenant Governor’s Business and Education Summit, to be hosted by the Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy and Georgia Northwestern Technical College.  Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Georgia Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Barge are among those slated to be in town for the event, set for November 15th and 16th, according to a Floyd County Schools news release.

EXPLOSION CA– USES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO STORE NEAR ALABAMA LINE

An explosion led to the destruction of a store on Georgia 20 near the Alabama line on Tuesday morning.  Propane gas ignited at Lynn’s Place on GA 20, leading to extensive damage to the store.

LOCAL CELEBRITIES VYING TO KISS A CATFISH IN CRBI FUNDRAISER

Local celebrities are vying to pucker up and kiss a…catfish!  The Catfish Kissin’ Contest is a part of the Coosa River Basin Initiative’s 11th annual Fish Fry & Green Expo, set for Saturday, November 10th from 11 am until 3 pm at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Rome.

NOVEMBER 6TH ELECTION IS ONE WEEK AWAY!!

The November 6th general election is just one week from today!  President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have found their campaigns halted due to Hurricane Sandy, with numerous speaking engagements canceled along the East Coast.  Here in Northwest Georgia, candidates continue their push to win local and state races.

HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES ABOUND IN ROME/FLOYD COUNTY

Little ghouls and goblins will take to the streets tomorrow in search of treats for Halloween.  The annual Trick or Treat on Broad Street is slated for tomorrow from 2 pm until 5 pm in downtown Rome.  Trick or treating will also be offered by merchants at Mount Berry Square Mall tomorrow evening from 6 pm until 9 pm.

GROUNDBREAKING SET FOR LAKEPOINT IN BARTOW COUNTY

Ground is scheduled to be broken this Thursday for LakePoint Sporting Community and Town Center in Bartow County.  The sports-themed multi-use facility will be one of the biggest projects in the region.  Former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox and current manager Fredi Gonzalez, along with Ned Yost, current Kansas City Royals manager, are partners in this venture and will be on hand for Thursday’s groundbreaking, along with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.  The groundbreaking is set to begin at 1 pm on the center’s site at 755 Highway 293 in Emerson.

SECOND EARLY VOTING LOCATION OPEN TODAY AT ROME CIVIC CENTER

A second early voting location opens today at the Rome Civic Center on Jackson Hill.  It will be open daily from 8 am until 5 pm through Thursday.  Early voting continues through Friday at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.
