ASSESSMENT NOTICES IN THE MAIL

The Floyd County Board of Assessors mailed out property assessment notices yesterday.  Some 48,000 notices will arrive at local residents’ mail boxes in the coming days.  Those with questions can call Floyd County Chief Tax Appraiser Bill McWhorter at (706) 291-5143 for real property or (706) 291-5125 for personal property.

BUSY DAYS AHEAD FOR DISABILITY LINK – SIGN LANGUAGE, OPEN HO– USE AND DISABILITY WORKSHOP

Busy days are ahead for disAbility Link in Rome.  The organization will team with Sign Language Interpreters of North Georgia to offer sign language classes at the Goodwill Career Center on Hicks Drive starting this Thursday, May 17th and continuing every Thursday for a seven week period thru June 28th.  Fees are $40 for finger spelling and numbers, $70 for basic American Sign Language and $90 for both courses.  Those with questions are asked to call disAbility Link’s Interim Executive Director Maia Santamaria at (706) 314-0008, extension 104 or email her at msantamaria@disabilitylink.org.

THE FORUM WELCOMES THE CLASS OF 2012

Graduation time is here.  The Forum in downtown Rome is the site of many graduation ceremonies this time of year.  Georgia Highlands College held their graduation there this past weekend.  Rome High School’s graduation ceremony is set for this Saturday, May 19th at 10 am at the Forum.  All of the Floyd County high schools will hold graduation ceremonies at the Forum the following weekend.  The schedule is as follows:  Friday, May 26th – Pepperell, 7 pm; Saturday, May 26th – Coosa at 10 am, Model at 2:30 pm and Armuchee at 7 pm.

ARMUCHEE MAN DIES IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

An Armuchee man died early yesterday following a single vehicle wreck on Floyd Springs Road late Sunday night.  Joseph Allen Norris, age 28 and of a Gazelle Dew Road address, had been traveling north on Floyd Springs Road about 11:30 pm when his Honda Civic hit a culvert and he lost control of the car.  The car went down an embankment, and Norris was ejected from it.  He had not been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.  Norris was pronounced dead just after midnight late Sunday night/early Monday.

AUTHENTIC NOBLE CANNON TO BE FIRED THIS THURSDAY

An authentic brass Noble Cannon produced in Rome will present four firings this Thursday, May 17th.  According to a release from the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, the firings will take place at 9:30 am, 12:30 pm, 5:30 pm and 7 pm at the Rome Floyd Visitor Center.  The GRCVB-sponsored events are being hosted by the City of Rome and are free.

SOAKING RAIN CLOSES OUT WEEKEND IN NWGA

Those in our area who are tired of major storms and were just hoping for a nice, soaking rain to hydrate the land got their wish this past weekend with steady showers that moved into Northwest Georgia late Saturday night and continued thru Sunday.  The National Weather Service reported some 1.31 inches of rain at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field in the Armuchee community from late Saturday night/early Sunday morning thru early this morning.  A chance of showers and thunderstorms hovers in the forecast thru the first part of this week, with skies expected to turn off mostly sunny by Wednesday.

CANCER NAVIGATORS TO BENEFIT FROM LOW COUNTRY BOIL

Cancer Navigators will benefit from a Low Country Boil dinner to be hosted by Harvest Moon Cafe this Tuesday (tomorrow) night, May 15th from 5 pm until 9:30 pm at the Moon Roof in downtown Rome during Cancer Navigators Night.  The after work event will feature the music of Scott Thompson at 6:30 pm.

CHATTOOGA RELAY FOR LIFE SET FOR THIS FRIDAY

The Chattooga County American Cancer Society Relay for Life is set for this Friday, May 18th at Dowdy Park in Summerville, beginning at 6 pm.  Teams from around the county will be at the event, raising money for Chattooga County cancer patients thru a variety of means such as sales of foods, shirts and cakes and playing games.  The Cancer Survivor Lap is set for 6 pm.  The “Caregiver” Lap will follow the Survivor Lap.  Cancer survivors are asked to be at the park by 5 pm to get your t-shirt provided by the American Cancer Society.
