RUNNING WATER POW-WOW CHEROKEE HOMECOMING AND RIPE CORN FESTIVAL SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The 23rd annual Running Water Pow-Wow Cherokee Homecoming and Ripe Corn Festival will take place this weekend at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome.  It will be open on Saturday, September 1st from 10 am until 10 pm and Sunday, September 2nd from 10 am until 6 pm.  Grand entry is scheduled for 1 pm and 7 pm on Saturday and at 1 pm on Sunday.  Attendees will enjoy Indian food, arts and crafts, educational and cultural programs, music dancing and audience participation.  New this year – an appearance by Winged Ambassadors:  Birds of Prey, according to Gertrude Dobson with the Native American Preservation Association of Georgia, the organization which presents the Pow-Wow.

ISAAC MAKES LANDFALL, BRINGS RAIN TO NWGA

Hurricane Isaac made landfall last night on the coast of Louisiana as a Category 1 Hurricane.  Bands from the storm led to rainy weather in Northwest Georgia, which is expected to continue today.  The National Weather Service predicts a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms for today with new rainfall amounts of between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.  A 60 percent chance of showers has been forecasted for tonight.

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY IN TAMPA

The Republican National Convention is officially underway in Tampa, Florida.  Mitt Romney has officially gotten the party’s nomination for President.  Highlights of the convention last night included speeches from Romney’s wife Ann and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.  Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan is expected to address the GOP tonight, while the man himself,  Mitt Romney, will speak tomorrow night.

DOT ANNOUNCES SUSPENSION OF CONSTRUCTION RELATED LANE CLOSURES FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND

The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced that all construction related lane closures will be halted for Labor Day weekend.  The suspension will begin at noon on Friday, August 31st and will continue through 5 am on Tuesday, September 4th.  

STUTTER? THERE IS HOPE!

Do you or does your child stutter?  There is hope.  Actor James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader and the star of movies such as Field of Dreams, suffered from the speech impediment but overcame it to become one of the most recognizable voices in America.  King George VI’s victory over the impediment with the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue was beautifully documented in the film The King’s Speech.

RABIES STILL A PROBLEM IN FLOYD COUNTY; MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS VACCINATED

Floyd County has seen many cases of rabies in the past couple of years.  In fact, Floyd had the most confirmed cases of any county in the state in 2011 at 15.  Dr. Dan Pate with the West Rome Animal Clinic reminds pet owners that it is important to make sure your pets are vaccinated against rabies, for their safety and your safety.  He adds that doing so is also important because it is the law.

SUMNER TO STEP DOWN AS CHAIR OF FLOYD HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT

J. Roger Sumner, Chairman of the Board of Floyd Healthcare Management, Inc., has announced that he will step down from his post, effective September 24, 2012.  He will remain a member of the board of directors and serve in the role of past chairman, according to a Floyd media release.

CEDARTOWN MAN PICKS UP THIRD WIN IN GEORGIA LOTTERY

A Cedartown resident recently picked up his third win from the Georgia Lottery.  Ronnie Dingler, owner of North Main Video in Cedartown, won a $20,000 prize, taxes paid, after being selected as a winner in the $3,000,000 Taxes Paid Weekly Extra Chance Drawing, according to a Georgia Lottery media release.
