RAIN, MILD TEMPERATURES TO GIVE WAY TO CLEAR SKIES, COOLER TEMPS LATER THIS WEEK

Rain and mild temperatures continue to cover Rome and Floyd County.  The National Weather Service reported almost a half an inch of rain from yesterday thru early this morning at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field in the Armuchee community.  Rain and fairly warm temperatures remain in the forecast for the next couple of days, it will start to feel more like winter as those temps drop and the rain moves out later on this week.

GEORGIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY BEGINS WORK UNDER THE GOLD DOME

The 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly got underway yesterday under the Gold Dome in Atlanta.  Area legislators say that they anticipate that the state’s budget and education will top their agenda in 2012.

The 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly gets underway today under the Gold Dome (the State Capitol) in Atlanta.  State Senator Barry Loudermilk said in an interview last week on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome that like last year, he believes tax reform will be a major focus of state legislators this year.  He also expects the T-SPLOST will continue to be a topic of discussion.  Loudermilk anticipates that the budget and education will also be important items of business for state legislators in 2012.

FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET FOR FIRST TIME IN 2012 TOMORROW

The Floyd County Commission will hold their first meeting of the new year tomorrow.  They’ll meet in a caucus session at noon, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 2 pm at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  Commissioners are expected to choose their chairman and vice chair at tomorrow’s meeting.  The meeting will also be the first official meeting as County Manager for Blaine Williams, who took the position permanently on January first.  Take a look at the Floyd County Commission’s agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

LIHEAP FUNDING TO RESUME TODAY FOR TALLATOONA CAP, INC.

If you are in need of financial assistance with your heating bills, there’s good news!  Additional funding has been allocated for the Low-Income Home Energy (Heating) Assistance Program (or LIHEAP) administered by Tallatoona CAP Inc.  The program opened to the elderly and home bound on November first, but was halted a few weeks later due to lack of funding.  Due to additional funding, Katrina Estes, service coordinator for Tallatoona CAP Inc., says the program will resume today.  Appointments will be scheduled at local county offices.  You must call for an appointment.  Those with (706) area codes are asked to schedule one by calling (toll free) (770) 773-7730.  You can also call (770) 383-3292 for more information.  No walk ins will be permitted, an appointment must be made to see if you are eligible for LIHEAP.

NEW PUBLIC ENTRANCE TO FLOYD MEDICAL CENTER’S EMERGENCY CARE CENTER OFFICIALLY OPEN TODAY

The new public entrance to the Emergency Care Center at Floyd Medical center is officially open today.  The new, canopied entry is located between the hospital’s North Entrance and the existing ECC, facing the corner of Turner McCall Boulevard and Martha Berry Boulevard.  Vehicle access to the entrance is available via Second Avenue and Turner McCall Boulevard.  A number of other new and improved ECC areas are open for the first time today, including an expanded waiting area, additional triage rooms and 12 additional patient rooms.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY AWARD RECIPIENTS NAMED

The 2012 Heart of the Community Awards of Honor recipients have been named.  This year’s honorees include Bryan Shealy, Shirley Miller Denmon, Nina Lovel, Greg Sumner, Nancy and David Hunter and Young Heart Rachel Rogers.  This year’s Board of Governor’s Honoree is Earl Tillman.  All will be honored at the 26th annual “An Affair of the Heart” on February 18th .  Tickets are available by calling Wanda Whitten at (706) 802-3924.  The Heart of the Community Awards are sponsored annually by Redmond Regional Medical Center and produced by the Heart of Community Board of Governors.
