A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS FOR FLOYD COUNTY SCHOOLS (AS WELL AS ST. MARY’S)

This is the first day of classes for students in the Floyd County Schools!  St. Mary’s School also begins the 2018-2019 school year today.  The first day of the new school year is tomorrow for those in the Rome City School system as well as Berry College Elementary and Middle Schools.

Just in time for the start of this new school year, the First Baptist Church of Rome will host Dr. Ruby Payne, acclaimed author, educator and an expert on building pathways out of poverty, for a series of sessions intended to address the issue of poverty in Rome and Floyd County.

Mark Butler, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor, reports that the Northwest Georgia region’s number of employed residents rose in June to hit an all-time high.  The area also experienced a spike in the labor force over the month.

Rome’s Downtown Development Authority hopes for a break in the rain this weekend as the August edition of Downtown Saturdays is scheduled to take place this Saturday evening.

FLOYD GOP RALLY SET FOR SATURDAY, FLOYD DEMS TO MEET THIS THURSDAY NIGHT

The 15th annual Floyd GOP Rally is slated for this Saturday at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field.  The gathering will commence at 10 am in the Tillman Hangar, according to Andy Garner, chair of the Floyd County Republican Party.  Lunch will be catered by Duffy’s Deli and will be served at 11 am.  The program will begin at 11:30 am and should conclude by 1 pm.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING

The Greater Rome area remains under a flash flood watch through this Friday morning at 8 am, according to the National Weather Service.  The forecast for this area calls for showers and thunderstorms into the weekend.
