BRAVES EARN SWEEP OF CARDINALS IN ST. LOUIS

Written by Matt Davis on July 2, 2018. Posted in Sports

The Atlanta Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Busch Stadium, allowing the Braves to complete their first sweep at St. Louis since 2012.

Offensive highlights included a two-run homer from Freddie Freeman off of John Gant in Atlanta’s five-run sixth inning.

Charlie Culberson also contributed two hits and drove in a couple of runs for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz got the win after giving up just one hit over five scoreless innings; he also walked three and struck out nine.

The Cardinals attempted a comeback with five runs in the seventh, including a three-run homer from Tommy Pham.  But the Braves diverted the threat and held on for the victory, again, by a final score of 6-5.

AJ Minter pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save for Atlanta; it was his third of the season.

The Braves will be in New York tonight to open a three-game interleague set against the Yankees.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.  The game will be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410; air time is 5:50 pm.

In a minor league update, the Rome Braves beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-5 in an outing that was shortened to eight innings due to rain on Sunday at State Mutual Stadium.  Those two teams will play again tonight at 7 pm.
