Written by Matt Davis on September 1, 2017. Posted in Sports

The Atlanta Braves closed out the month of August with a loss to the defending World Champion Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Thursday night in the opener of a four game set at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

Kris Bryant led the charge offensively for the Cubs with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sean Newcomb took the loss for Atlanta after giving up three runs and eight hits, walking three and striking out seven over five innings.  Kyle Hendricks was credited with the win for Chicago.

The Braves will face the Cubs again this afternoon at 2:20 pm.  This game will not be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410, but we will have coverage of the remainder of the series at Chicago from the Braves Radio Network.

In a minor league update, the Rome Braves fell to the Greenville Drive 12-1 in the finale of a three-game set at Greenville, South Carolina on Thursday night, allowing the Drive to sweep the series.  The Braves will open their final homestand of the year tonight versus the Columbia Fireflies.  First pitch is set for 7 pm at State Mutual Stadium.
