BRAVES ASSUME TOP SPOT OF NL EAST WITH EXTRA INNING WIN OVER PIRATES

Written by Matt Davis on June 13, 2019. Posted in Sports

The Atlanta Braves assumed sole possession of first place in the NL East with an 8-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings on Wednesday evening at SunTrust Park.  It marked the Braves’ sixth straight victory and allowed them to take a 3-0 lead in their four game set with Pittsburgh.

Austin Riley tied the outing at 7-7 with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.  He crossed home plate to score the winning run on an RBI double off the bat of Ozzie Albies in the 11th inning.

Atlanta starting pitcher Mike Soroka allowed career highs of five runs and 10 hits over five innings.  Jacob Webb pitched a pair of scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief.  Michael Feliz took the loss for Pittsburgh.

The Braves will wrap up their series with the Pirates today at 12:10 pm.  The game will not be broadcast on WLAQ 1410 AM and 96.9 FM as we air Rush Limbaugh at that time.  WLAQ will resume coverage from the Braves Radio Network as the Braves welcome the Philadelphia Phillies to Atlanta for a NL East showdown over the weekend.  In a minor league update, the Rome Braves beat the Charleston Riverdogs by a final score of 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium.  Rome heads to Augusta to face the Greenjackets tonight at 7:05 pm.
