COLLEGE SOFTBALL: SHORTER SPLITS WITH LEE, BERRY VS. YOUNG HARRIS CALLED OFF DUE TO RAINY FORECAST

Shorter University’s 9th-ranked Lady Hawks softball team split a Southern States Athletic Conference double header with 11th ranked Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee yesterday.  Lee won the opener 6-4, while Shorter won the night cap 6-1.  That leaves Shorter and Lee tied at the top of the SSAC East Division standings.  The Lady Hawks will head to Gainesville to face Brenau this evening at 5 pm in a double header.  They’ll close out the regular season on Saturday in Cleveland, Georgia against Truett McConnell.

SHORTER BASEBALL RANKED 15 IN NAIA TOP 25 POLL

In news from the Shorter University baseball team, the Hawks have been ranked number 15 in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.  The NAIA released poll results last night.  This marks the highest ranking in Shorter baseball history, according to a Shorter sports release.

GREATER ROME CHAMBER KICKS OFF MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce kicked off its 2012 Membership Drive yesterday evening with a special event at the Rome Area History Museum.  Teams presented skits to emphasize the benefits of being a chamber member.  The goal for the drive is $25,000 in memberships.  The drive will continue thru late May.

ISAKSON CALLS FOR FAIR TAX ON TAX DAY

Yesterday, of course, was Tax Day.  US Senator Johnny Isakson called on Congress yesterday to enact a fairer, simpler tax system at a tax-day rally held on Capitol Hill.  Isakson has co-sponsored legislation to repeal the tax code and to establish a national sales tax during every session of Congress since being elected to the US Senate.

RAINY MORNING, RAIN AHEAD FOR THE WEEKEND

Romans woke up to a rainy Wednesday, and more rain is predicted for today.  The National Weather Service has predicted an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for today, which will move out this evening and leave the area with mostly cloudy skies.  More rain is in the forecast for this weekend.

ROME BRAVES GAME SUSPENDED DUE TO POWER OUTAGE

Last night’s Rome Braves game with the Savannah Sand Gnats was suspended due to a power failure at State Mutual Stadium.  The game will resume today in the top of the fifth and will go nine innings.  It will be followed by a seven inning game.
