ROME RECEIVES GRANT FROM GEORGIA ENVIRONMENTAL FINANCE AUTHORITY

Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) Executive Director Kevin Clark has announced the approval of a Georgia Fund loan of $2,500,000 to the city of Rome.  The loan, which has been approved by the GEFA executive committee, will finance improvements at the Bruce Hamler Water Treatment Facility.  The total project cost is $2,500,000 with GEFA providing the entire amount, according to a GEFA media release.

2012 ELECTION SEASON CONTINUES

The 2012 election season continues.  Mitt Romney picked up a win in Illinois yesterday.  It’s been two weeks since Super Tuesday, when Georgia voters went to the polls along with voters in nine other states.  While that was a big day where the race for the Republican nomination for president is concerned, more big days are ahead, according to Layla Shipman with Floyd GOP, who was a guest on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome on Tuesday.  Voters will go to the polls in Louisiana this Saturday, and elections have yet to be held in a number of other states.

TELLUS M– USEUM PICKS UP 7.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN MEXICO

The seismograph at the Tellus:  Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville picked up the earthquake that hit Oaxaca, Mexico yesterday afternoon.  The earthquake was of a 7.6 magnitude and struck just after 2 pm.  According to information from the Tellus Museum, that particular region has a history of large earthquakes as it is at a convergent tectonic plate boundary.  The first seismic signal arrived at the Tellus seismograph about five minutes after the earthquake occurred.  Annually, there are about 10 magnitude 7 or greater earthquakes worldwide.  This is the third in 2012.

FLOYD MEDICAL CENTER’S PALLIATIVE CARE PROGRAM IN THE RUNNING FOR LIVESTRONG GRANT

Floyd Medical Center’s Palliative Care program is among 11 programs in the southeastern United States in contention for the Livestrong Community Impact Project.  Livestrong is the organization founded by cyclist Lance Armstrong to serve those living with cancer and to empower communities to take action against the world’s leading cause of death.

ROME TO HOST GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE’S 2012 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Rome, Georgia will be the site of the Gulf South Conference’s 2012 Baseball Tournament, the organization announced yesterday.  A one-year agreement has been reached with the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Rome Braves for the two to host the five-day tournament at State Mutual Stadium from May 4th – 8th.  This is the first time that the conference has held the tournament in Georgia since 2001 when it was hosted by Valdosta State, according to a GSC media release.

SHORTER HAWKS REFLECTIVE ON AMAZING 2011-2012 SEASON

What turned out to be an amazing 2011-2012 season came to an end for the Shorter University men’s basketball team came to an end on Monday night with a loss to Concordia 81-67 in the semifinal round of the 2012 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in Kansas City, Missouri.  While the Hawks would have loved to win in it all in the national championship, they had a remarkable season with many accomplishments and milestones.  Assistant coach Tyler Murray told Matt Davis on Matt D and Mullins in the Mornin’ on 95.7 FM The Ridge on Tuesday that he is proud of the team and what they’ve accomplished.

ATLANTA HAWKS TO HOST CLEVELAND CAVALIERS TONIGHT

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks will host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at 7:30 pm at the Philips Arena.  The Hawks won the last outing between the teams 103-87 in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO DETROIT TIGERS IN SPRING TRAINING

In Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves fell to the Detroit Tigers 7-2 yesterday in Spring Training action in Lakeland, Florida.  The Braves will head to Viera to take on the Washington Nationals this afternoon at 1:05 pm.
