N.W. GEORGIA RED CROSS RESPONDS FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY STORMS

ROME: (February 22, 2012) – Red Cross volunteers from the Northwest Georgia Chapter have been in the field throughout the day assessing recovery needs of residents of storm- ravaged Floyd County. The Red Cross will work to ensure that emergency-caused needs are met. Current estimates are that 50 -100 homes were damaged by the Wednesday night storms, including homes in the hard-hit Dykes Creek and Turner Chapel neighborhoods.

MODEL AND JOHNSON SCHOOLS OPEN FRIDAY

The Model and Johnson area schools will be open on Friday.  Model High School, Model Middle School, Model Elementary School, Johnson Elementary School and the Floyd County Education Center were all closed today due to storm damage in the area.  Power was restored to all schools by mid-morning today and road crews have been working to clear roadways of debris.  School system personnel have been in close contact with Emergency Management officials during the day as work continued to repair storm damage.  System personnel have been informed that road work will continue through the afternoon and that all major roads and most secondary roads will be cleared and passable by morning.

A storm ripped through Floyd County last night, leaving a handful of people without power and causing some structure damage.  Speaking of power outages, Tim Hensley with the Floyd County School system told WLAQ News/The Ridge Report this morning that schools in the Model district will be closed today due to power outage.  That includes Model Elementary, Middle and High Schools, Johnson Elementary and the Floyd County Education Center.

NEWT GINGRICH TO VISIT ROME

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will make a stop in Rome next Tuesday as part of his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Layla Shipman with the Floyd GOP is coordinating the Gingrich campaign in the area and says that Gingrich will make a stop at the Tillman Hangar at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field at 3 pm.  His visit will come one week before Super Tuesday, March 6th.

FLOYD COUNTY VOTERS TO WEIGH IN ON SPLOST ON MARCH 6TH

Super Tuesday is right around the corner. March 6th is the day that Georgia voters will go to the polls (along with voters in other states) for the presidential preference primary election.  In addition, Floyd County voters will weigh in on the proposed 2012 SPLOST.  Floyd County Manager Blaine Williams and Rome City Manager John Bennett discussed the SPLOST on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome on Wednesday.

SHORTER SENIOR NABS INDONESIAN AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Nugroho, a Shorter University senior and a native of Indonesia, has been selected as one of three bachelor’s-level recipients of the Indonesian Ambassador’s Award for Excellence.  The award is given by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the United States and honors Indonesian students in the US who show excellent academic and nonacademic performance, show leadership both on and off campus, and have community awareness, according to a Shorter University media release.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY TO HOST LEE UNIVERSITY TONIGHT; LISTEN ON 95.7 FM THE RIDGE

The Shorter University men’s and women’s basketball teams will play their final home games of the 2011-2012 regular season against Southern States Athletic Conference rival Lee University tonight.  The 20th ranked Lady Hawks will take on the Lady Flames at 6 pm and the number two Hawks will take on the Flames at 8 pm at Shorter’s Winthrop King Centre.  The games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  We’ll also have coverage this Saturday as the regular season ends on the road for the Hawks and Lady Hawks with more SSAC action in Cleveland, Georgia against  Truett McConnell.  The women will play at 2 pm, followed by the men at 4 pm.
