ATLANTA FALCONS HOPE TO STAY UNDEFEATED IN DC

The 4-0 Atlanta Falcons will be searching for their fifth straight win to start the 2012 season as they head to Washington DC on Sunday to take on the Redskins.  Kick off is set for 1 pm.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge, Northwest Georgia’s radio home for Atlanta Falcons football.  Pre-game programming will begin at 11 am.

BUFFALO BILL, FORMER DARLINGTON STANDOUT SHAWN POWELL TO SERVE AS GUEST ON WLAQ’S SPORTS TALK SATURDAY

Sports fans, join WLAQ AM 1410 tomorrow morning for this weekend’s edition of Sports Talk Saturday with Matt D and Scott.  The dynamic duo will welcome former Darlington football standout and current Buffalo Bill Shawn Powell to the studio.  Powell, who is also a former Florida State standout, got the start in the Bills’ match against the New England Patriots last Sunday.

NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TO BE PLAYED ON A THURSDAY THIS YEAR

It has been confirmed that the 2012 Russell Athletic-NAIA Football National Championship will be held on a Thursday this year.  According to a release from the NAIA Host Committee, the game is set for Thursday, December 13th at 6:30 pm at Barron Stadium.  The change was made to ensure national television exposure for the participating schools and the NAIA on the CBS Sports Network.

IT’S SENIOR DAY AT THE COOSA VALLEY FAIR!!

Fall’s Finest Festival, the 64th annual Coosa Valley Fair, continues today at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds in Rome.  Today is Senior Citizens Day at the Fair.  It will be a special day with free admission from 1 pm until 5 pm for those age 55 and older, according to Fair president-elect Jim Talley.

OBAMA, ROMNEY GO HEAD TO HEAD IN FIRST DEBATE OF ELECTION SEASON

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney went to head-to-head in their first debate for this election cycle last night at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado.  The candidates focused primarily on domestic issues, including health care, the economy and education.  Vice President Joe Biden and Republican VP candidate Paul Ryan will face each other in a Vice Presidential debate next Thursday, October 11th at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.  Two more Presidential debates have been scheduled for later this month.  The first is set for Tuesday, October 16th at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.  The last has been scheduled for Monday, October 22nd at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.

BRAVES MIRACLE FIELD TO KICK OFF FALL SEASON OCTOBER 20TH

The Braves Miracle Field of Rome will kick off its fall season on Saturday, October 20th.  The Rome Braves and the Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority are seeking volunteers for the season that runs thru November 17th, according to a Braves media release.

ATLANTA BRAVES CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH SHUT OUT WIN OVER PITTSBURGH PIRATES…NOW, ON TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!

The Atlanta Braves closed out the 2012 regular season with a 4-0 shut out win over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park.  Ben Sheets pitched one scoreless inning to start the game in his final Major League appearance as he announced earlier this week his intentions to retire after that game.  Sheets had an inspiring comeback with the Braves in the second half of the season after being sidelined by Tommy John surgery a couple of years ago.  Yesterday marked his first appearance since late August as he has been on the disabled list.
