Labor Day weekend has arrived!  There are a number of events to which you may avail yourself over the holiday weekend.  Here’s a list of some of those events:

In other news, Berry College Board of Trustees member Sheryle Bolton has been selected as the new Chief Executive Officer for Sally Ride Science, a science education company named for the late astronaut that is focused on igniting interest in science and science careers.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAMS READY TO TAKE THE FIELD TONIGHT

SHORTER UNIVERSITY KICKS OFF SEASON IN VICTORIOUS FASHION OVER CAMPBELL

Shorter University’s football team opened up their 2012 season in victorious fashion with a 31-20 win over Campbell in Buies Creek, North Carolina last night.  The game was the Hawks’ first as a member of the Gulf Coast Conference of the NCAA Division II.

ROME BRAVES TOPPED BY AUGUSTA GREENJACKETS IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME AT SMS

The Rome Braves lost to the Augusta Greenjackets 5-1 last night at State Mutual Stadium in the Braves’ final regular season home game of the year.

ATLANTA BRAVES BACK HOME SWEET HOME TO OPEN WEEKEND SERIES WITH PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

The Atlanta Braves were off last night and return to action at Turner Field tonight with a seven game home stand that will include three games with the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend and four games with the Colorado Rockies next week.  Tonight’s game one against the Phillies is set for 7:35 pm.  It will not be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410 due to our coverage of high school football featuring Darlington at Cartersville at that time.  We will, however, broadcast the rest of the weekend series from the Atlanta Braves radio network.  Air time for Saturday’s game is 2:50 pm.

LOCAL RESIDENT ENJOYING REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION IN TAMPA

Mitt Romney is expected to accept his party’s nomination for President of the United States tonight at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.  The Floyd GOP is having a ‘watch party’ at their headquarters at 337 Broad Street in downtown Rome.  The gathering will commence at 6 pm.  Light refreshments will be served.  The public is invited, according to Layla Shipman with the Floyd GOP.

STATE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT BARGE PRESENTS PHILLIPS AWARD TO FAMILY OF BONNIE COOK

State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge paid a visit to Pepperell Middle School yesterday to present the Phillips Award to the family of Bonnie Cook.  Cook, who served as the school’s secretary for 22 years, passed away in a tragic van fire on her way to treatment at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center on August 25, 2011.  Dr. Barge presented the award to Bonnie’s husband Jim.  Also in attendance at the presentation:  Bonnie’s daughter Julie, brother Dean Brannon, sister-in-law Janice Brannon and niece Ashley Brannon.
