ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO CINCINNATI REDS IN SERIES OPENER IN CINCY

The Atlanta Braves lost to the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 last night in the opener of a four game series in Cincinnati.  Tough loss for Braves starting pitcher Mike Minor, who gave up four solo home runs in last night’s game.

SHORTER SOFTBALL HEADING FOR SEMIFINALS OF NAIA TOURNEY

Shorter University’s 10th ranked Lady Hawks softball team picked up back-to-back wins yesterday over of Cal State San Marcos 4-3 and Oklahoma City 3-1 yesterday to advance to the semifinal round of the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The Lady Hawks will take on conference mate and 16th ranked Brenau today at 1:30 pm.  The winner of that game will head to the national championship game on Wednesday.

GHC NAMES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

Georgia Highlands College’s Athletics Director Phil Gaffney has announced the appointment of Brandan Harrell as the college’s women’s basketball coach.  According to a GHC press release, Harrell comes to Georgia Highlands from South Georgia Technical College in Cordele, where he served as head coach since the inception of that school’s women’s basketball program in 2004.

ROME CITY COMMISSION TO MEET TONIGHT

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session this evening.  They’ll convene in a caucus session at 5 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 6:30 pm at City Hall on Broad Street in downtown Rome.  Detrick Redding is scheduled to be sworn in as the newest Commissioner.  He was chosen from a slate of eight candidates to take the Ward Two post vacated by Duane Reid at the end of February.  Take a look at Commissioners’ agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET TOMORROW

The Floyd County Commission will also meet this week.  They’ll meet tomorrow at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  Their 4 pm caucus session will be followed by their regular meeting at 6 pm.  You can also view the Floyd County Commission’s agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

HERO2HIRED PROVIDES INCENTIVE FOR EMPLOYERS TO HIRE RESERVISTS, VETERANS

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is urging employers to hire reservists and veterans and are offering many incentives for them to do so through their Hero2Hired program.  Hero2Hired is a program of the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program.  Randy Hardin, retired First Sergeant with the US Army, is promoting Hero2Hired on behalf of the ESGR.  He says that the mission of the program is to create a cooperative culture of employer support of the National Guard and Reserve.

HOME DEDICATION AMONG FLURRY OF ACTIVITY FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The Rome and Floyd County Habitat for Humanity held a home dedication yesterday.  It was for the home of the Adams’ family at 232 Couper Street in Rome.  Candice Adams will inhabit the house with her three children.

ROME BRAVES DROP SERIES CLOSER TO CHARLESTON RIVERDOGS

The Rome Braves lost to the Charleston Riverdogs 6-1 in the series closer between the teams yesterday evening at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston, South Carolina.  The Braves won one of five games in their series with the Riverdogs, who maintain the top spot in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League with 29 wins and 13 losses.  The Braves are in last place with 9 wins and 33 losses.  Yesterday’s game was the last of an eight-game road trip that started in Augusta and left the Braves with three wins and five losses for the whole trip.
