MAN KILLED BY TRAIN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED

The 29-year-old man that was hit and killed by a train on Wednesday night has been identified.  Donald Hicks, Jr. of Legion Drive in Lindale was struck by a Norfolk-Southern train at the tracks along Maple Road where it turns into Park Avenue.  He and another person tried to cross the tracks about 9:30 pm Wednesday night.  The other person made it across.  Hicks was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center shortly after the incident.

ADULT SPELLING BEE BENEFITS HARBOR HO– USE

The Shane Richardson Memorial Adult Spelling Bee was held last night out at Berry College.  The Hive Talkin’ team won it for properly spelling “lagniappe”.  The event raised money for the Harbor House, a local non-profit organization aimed at serving children who are victims of sexual or physical abuse.

NUMBER ONE SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS’ WINNING STREAK ENDED BY POINT UNIVERSITY

The Shorter University mens’ basketball team’s season-long winning streak has come to an end as the previously undefeated and number one Hawks were narrowly defeated by Point University 73-72 in a non-conference match last night in East Point.  Shorter is still unbeaten in conference play.  The Hawks and the Lady Hawks will face Southern States Athletic Conference rival Southern Wesleyan tomorrow in Central, South Carolina.  The women will play at 2 pm, followed by the men at 4 pm.  The games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

ATLANTA HAWKS LOSE TO MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES AT PHILIPS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks returned to their home court of the Philips Arena last night only to lose to the Memphis Grizzlies 96-77.  It was just the Hawks’ second home loss of the season, leaving them with eight wins and two losses at home and a 16 win – seven loss record overall so far for the 2011-2012 season.  The Hawks will welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to the Philips Arena tomorrow night; tip off is set for 7 pm.

PATRIOTS AND GIANTS TO FACE OFF IN SUPER BOWL 46 THIS SUNDAY

And, of course, Super Bowl Sunday is coming up this weekend.  The AFC Champion New England Patriots and the NFC Champion New York Giants will go head to head in Super Bowl 46 on Sunday evening at 6:30 pm in Indianapolis.  The game will be televised on NBC.

NATIONAL TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH TO BE OBSERVED LOCALLY IN FEBRUARY

This month, February, is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.  Amy Weaver, Executive Director of the Hospitality House for Women says that the statistics are staggering related to teen violence.  She says that 71 percent of teens say that bullying is a problem in school.  Weaver indicates that her organization will be working hard on a variety of activities this month to bring the issue to light.
