ROME CITY COMMISSION CANDIDATES FORUM HELD LAST NIGHT

A forum was held last night at the Rome Civic Center for candidates seeking the Rome City Commission Ward 2 seat vacated by Duane Reid at the end of February.  It was moderated by former Floyd County Commissioner Jerry Jennings.  Eight Romans are seeking the post.  The list of candidates includes:  George Anderson, Ralph Davis Jr., Shirley Denmon, Mike Finnegan, Tyrone Holland, Pete McDonald Jr., Steven McDowell Jr. and Detrick Redding.  The Rome City Commission is expected to choose their new commissioner on May 7th.

The annual Membership Drive of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce is officially underway.  Eight teams of chamber members are canvassing the area, urging those who are not already members of the Chamber to join. This year’s campaign is taking on a School House Rock theme, with the theme of Chamber House Rock.

ROME BRAVES DROP TWO TO SAVANNAH SAND GNATS TO CLOSE OUT OPENING HOME STAND

The Rome Braves lost two games to the Savannah Sand Gnats yesterday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium to close out their first home stand of 2012.  They lost the first game 4-3, which was the completion of a game that began on Tuesday night and was suspended because the lights went out at the stadium.  That was followed by a 2-0 loss in the nightcap.

The Atlanta Braves took a 14-6 victory from the New York Mets at Turner Field yesterday to close out their 2012 opening home stand.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: SHORTER SPLITS WITH LEE, BERRY VS. YOUNG HARRIS CALLED OFF DUE TO RAINY FORECAST

Shorter University’s 9th-ranked Lady Hawks softball team split a Southern States Athletic Conference double header with 11th ranked Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee yesterday.  Lee won the opener 6-4, while Shorter won the night cap 6-1.  That leaves Shorter and Lee tied at the top of the SSAC East Division standings.  The Lady Hawks will head to Gainesville to face Brenau this evening at 5 pm in a double header.  They’ll close out the regular season on Saturday in Cleveland, Georgia against Truett McConnell.

SHORTER BASEBALL RANKED 15 IN NAIA TOP 25 POLL

In news from the Shorter University baseball team, the Hawks have been ranked number 15 in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.  The NAIA released poll results last night.  This marks the highest ranking in Shorter baseball history, according to a Shorter sports release.

ECO JUBILEE SET FOR THIS SATURDAY

GREATER ROME CHAMBER KICKS OFF MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce kicked off its 2012 Membership Drive yesterday evening with a special event at the Rome Area History Museum.  Teams presented skits to emphasize the benefits of being a chamber member.  The goal for the drive is $25,000 in memberships.  The drive will continue thru late May.
